VPATENTEUFEBZ3IIHYI 3565414 .l7 mvsm'on 4 Arthur W. Carlson MBW ATTORNEYS TABLE g BACKGROUND This invention relates to a table, and, more particularly, to a table particularly suitable fur use insewing, drafting, and the like.
In cutting and sewing material, the material is often first laid on a flat surface and stretched so that a pattern can be traced on the material and to facilitate cutting the material. It is desirable that the material be held in'a relatively taut manner to increase the accuracy of the tracing and cutting operations. The material can be stretched and anchored by means of sewing pins, but it is preferable that the smooth upper surface of the table not be marred by holes and the like. Further, it is desirable that means he provided for-storing the pins when not in use in order to keep themfrom becoming scattered beneath the material and to allow the sewer tolocate the pins when they are needed. I
SUMMARY The inventive table is provided with a'perimetrically extending trough around its outer edge for collecting and storing pins, and the material may be anchoredby inserting pins into a pad attached to the lower surface of the table below the trough. A rounded edge molding provides the outer wall of the trough and also provides a smooth, curved surface about which the material may be pulled before; it is anchored by the pins. The molding is removably secured'to the table by means of a stem portion'which extends inwardly into a slot provided in the outer edge of the table, and the stern portion includes a pair of spaced ribs of enlarged cross section which frictionally engage the walls of the recess. The walls of the pin-collecting trough are rounded to facilitate removal ofthe pins therefrom, and the molding merges with the lowersurface of the pin pad to eliminate cornersrwhich may snag the material.
- DESCRIPTION or HE oizitwmos DESCRIPTION OF SPECIFIC EMBODIMENT Referring to the drawing, the numeral '10 designates generally a table having a table topll supported by a pair of supporting legs 12. The particular table top illustrated is generally rectangular and includes a relatively thin sheet 13 of melamine plastic laminated to a thickeribody 14 of wood. The melamine sheet 13 provides a smooth, durable upper surface 15 of the table, and the wood body 14 provides the lower surface 15 of the table.
The melamine sheet 13 terminates inwardly of the outer edge 17 of the wood body 14, and the body is cut away to pro-' vide inwardly extending perimetric upper and lower recesses 18 and 19, respectively. The upper recess 18 terminates ina curved upwardly extending wall 20 which merges with the outer edge of the melamine sheet 13, and the lower recess 19 terminates in a downwardly extending shoulder 21. An elongated cork pad 22 which is generally rectangular in vertical cross section is received by the lower-recess 19 and secured therein by adhesive, tacks, or the likelThe body 14 is also provided with a perimetrically extending slot 23 which extends inwardly from the outer edge 17 of the wood body approximately midway between the upper and lower surface thereof.
1 A vinyl molding strip 24 extends around the outer edge of the table top and is seen to be generally T-shaped in transverse the width of the slot 23 and which are frictionally engaged by the upper and lower walls of the slot.
7 The molding 24 has an upper lip portion 28 which extends inwardly over the outer edge of the recess 18 and has an outwardly and upwardly curved outer surface 29 which cooperates with the curved inner wall 20 of the recess 18 to provide a pin-collecting trough 30 which extends around the outer edge of the table. The curved outer surface 26 of the molding curves downwardly from the lip portion 28 and merges smoothly with the lower surface of the pad 22 as at 31.
Material which is to be traced or cut may be placed on the upper surface of the table provided by the melamine sheet 13, and the edges of the material may be pulled around the curved molding strip 24 and anchored by pins which may be inserted into the pad 22. Referring to FIG. 3, a piece of material 32 is shown pulled around the molding. and secured by pins 33 which are inserted into the pad 22 at an angle to provide better holding strength. The curved outer surface of the molding 24 eliminates the possibility that the material 32 will become snagged, and the somewhat resilient vinyl molding provides a cushion when the person using the table leans against the edge of the table to work in the center of the table.
The trough 30 provides a convenient place for storing the pins 33 when they are not being used, and the rounded walls 20- and 29 the trough facilitate removal of the pins. The pins may merely be pulled toward one of the walls and up over the wall until they can be grasped. Y
In one specific embodiment of the table top, the total thickness between the upper and lower surfaces 15 and 16 was fifteen-sixteenths inch, the curved wall 02 20 of the upper recess 18 was one-half inch from the outer edge 17 of the body portion 14 of the table and had a radius of one-eighth inch. The shoulder 21 of the lower recess l9 was three-fourths inch from the outer edge of the body portion, and the cross-sectional dimensions of the pad 22 were three-fourths inch by one-fourth inch. The elongated rectangular cross-sectional configuration of the pad insured that the pins 33 would be inserted at a proper angle to increase the holding strength of the plIlS.
Although the particular table illustrated is rectangular, other on configurations may be used. For example, the table may be circular of polygonal. Also, the table may be used for purposes other than sewing, such as drafting and the like.
While in the foregoing specification, adetailed description of a specific embodiment was set forth for the purpose of illustration, it is to be understood that many of the details hereingiven may be varied considerably by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
