Application May 10, 1948, Serial No. 26,117
This invention relates to a knife sharpener and has for its primary object the provision of a small, handy unit consisting of a sheet of emery paper shaped. for greater utility, an emery stone, and a leather strop all removably and adjustably mounted on a single handled base.
Another object of the invention is to provide a knife sharpener which removably carries a number of sharpening surfaces which may be readily and easily replaced when they are worn or when it is desired to alter the roughness of the sharpening surfaces.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide a knife sharpener which carries emery cloth or paper in the form of a trough having rounded sides to permit the sharpening of irregular cutting edges, such as hook knives, etc.
A further object of the invention is to provide a knife sharpener having a generally rectangular base, apertured handles secured to the ends of the base, a strop removably andresilientlymounted to one portion of the top surface of the base, an emery stone slidably and removably mounted to another portion of the top surface of the base, and emery paper or cloth also slidably and removably secured to the bottom surface of the base.
These, together with various ancillary objects and features of the invention which will later become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by the device, a preferred embodiment of which has been illustrated by way of example only in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is an isometric view of the entire knife sharpener in assembly;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the sharpener;
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially on the plane of the section line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is another transverse sectional view taken substantially on the plane of the section line 44 of Figure 2;
Figure 5 is another transverse sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 5-5 of Figure 2;
Figure 6 is an isometric view of the emery cloth or paper;
Figure 7 is an isometric view of the emery stone; and
Figure 8 is an isometric View of the strop unit.
Specific reference is now made to the drawings. In the several views, similar reference characters indicate corresponding elements throughout.
5 Claims. (Cl. 51-481) Indicated generally at H] is a base, preferably a rectangular wooden block; to either or both sides of which are afiixed a pair of handles [2 having vertical apertures l4 for mounting the base on suitablelugs if desired.
Removably secured transversely to the top surface of the base at one portion thereof by means of screws l6 and I8 are a pair of spaced, generally U-shaped supports 20 and 22. One of the legs of the support 20 is provided at its top edge with an open, generall U-shaped slot 24, while one of the legs of the support 22 is provided with an integral transverse lip 26 having an open, generally U-shaped slot 28.
As shown in Figure 8, a leather strop 30 is provided transverse the ends of which are suitably secured a pair of clamps or retainers 32 and 34, preferably made of metal. Welded to the clamp 34 is a longitudinal finger 35 carrying a head 38, while to the clamp 32 is welded a longitudinal threaded finger 40 which carries an internally threaded sleeve 42 preferably a wing nut. As shown in Figures 1 and 2, the strop is positioned on the base by slipping the finger 36 into the slot 28 while the finger 40 is slipped into the slot 24. By tightening the nut 42, the strop is stretched tautly across the supports 20 and 22.
Frictionally retained to the sides of the base 10 beneath the supports 20 and 22 and extending longitudinally of the base, a pair of metallic strips 44 and 46 are provided the tops of which are bent to produce horizontal longitudinal lip portions 48 and 5B. The bottoms of the strips 44 and 46 are bent to produce upwardly and outwardly inclined longitudinal lips 52 and 54 which as will be explained later serves to slidably retain the emery cloth or paper. To the lip portions 48 and 50 immediately in front of the support 22 is secured, as by welding, a pair of strips 56 and 58 which are upwardly and inwardly inclined and serve to slidably retain the emery stone 60 therebetween. As shown in Figure 7, the emery stone is in the form of a substantially rectangular block having longitudinal, generally V-shaped, side grooves 52 and 64 which are engaged by the strips 56 and 58, respectively. The emery stone may be provided with diiferent abrasion faces so that the stone may be reversed if desired.
Secured by means of tacks 66 to the bottom surface of the base is a longitudinal piece of felt or rubber 68. Beneath the felt or rubber a piece of emery paper or cloth I0 is slidably retained by the lips 52 and 54. The construction of the emery paper or cloth is shown in Figure 6. It is generally in the form of a trough the inner sur- 3 face of which is smooth, the outer surface of which is abrasive. The sides 12 and 14 of the emery paper have integral downwardly and outwardly inclined lip portions 16 and 18. To the lips 76 and '18 are secured a pair of longitudinal metallic, generally U-shaped strips 88 and 82.
In View of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the de vice will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described (a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
