UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CYRUS MATTHEWS, or ANAMOSA, IOWA.
BREAD-TOASTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 354,562,. dated December 21, 1886.
Application filed August 19, 18F6. Sprial No. 210,726. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OYRUs MATTHEws, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anamosa, in the county of Jones and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bread-Toasters, of which the following is a specification. Y
My invention is an improvement in breadtoasters; and it consists in the peculiar construction that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claim. N The object of my invention is to provide a breadtoaster which is cheap and simple, and is made of a single piece of wire bent to form a handle and a rack in which to hold the piece of bread; and this object I attain by the construction hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the breadtoaster embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of thesanie. Fig. 3 is atop plan view. Fig. 4 is a detached perspective View of the toaster-head.
In order to form the bread-toaster a piece of Wire of suitable length is first bent in the center, as at A, and at a suitable distance from this bend A each arm of the wire is bent, as at B, and the wires then extend upwardly for a slight distance, as at D, and are then bent outwardly at right angles, as at E. From the outer ends of the portions E the wire is then bent downwardly, as at F, and at the lower ends of the portions F are formed semicircular curves G, from which the wires extend upwardly, as at H, the said portions H being parallel with the portions F, and the wires are then bent inwardly to form the horizontal portions I, which are on the same plane with the horizontal portions E. The arms. of the wire meet at the curve A, and are then bent at right angles and extended outwardly and twisted together, so as to form the handle K, in the rear end of which is formed an eye, L. X
From the foregoing description it will be readily understood that the portions 0, E, F, H, E, I, and A form an open rack, which is adapted to receive and retain the slice of bread to be toasted when the same is presented to the fire. If preferred, the curved portion A may be secured to the outer end of the handle by means of a wire, M, in order to more firmly brace the rack and retain it in the correct shape and position.
Having thus described my invention, I clain1 The bread-toaster made of a single piece of wire bent at its middle to form the loop A, and the curves or loops forming the open rack, and the twisted handle K, the two parts of the wire being brought together and secured to the loop A at M, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CYRUS MATTHEWS.
