Butter Knife Rests.
No. 135,156. Patentedjan. 21,1873.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN D. REED, OF WESTFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT m BUTTER-KNIFE RESTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 35,156, dated January 21,1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN D. REED, of Westfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Butter Knife Rests; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a butterknife rest, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my butter-knife rest; and Fig. 2 shows a slight modification in the construction of the same.
A A represent three wires of suitable length, the upper ends of which are attached to and connected by a head, B, or other ornament, forming a handle; or the Wires may form, at their upper ends, a loop, or any convenient handle. Near the lower end of each wire A is made a bend, a, as shown, and a short distance above the same the wire is bent to form a hook, b, or the wire may be left straight and the hook b soldered or otherwise fastened on the same, as shown in Fig. 2.
This device can be readily put on to any kind of dish or plate, and is readily attached by taking hold of one of the wires, then placing the bends a a of the other two on the edge of the dish or plate, when the third wire is readily sprung to its place, and when on it will make a very convenient device for passing the butter-dish, as well as a butter-knife rest.
The knife blade or handle is to rest in one of the hooks b, or the knife may be supported in two of the hooks, if so desired.
I do not confine myself to the precise number of wires herein mentioned, as this may be varied to suit the taste 5 for instance, more than three may be used. The device may be made to any size or style, and very ornamental or plain, as desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new. and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- Three or more spring-wires, A A, meeting at the top, and having handle B, each wire formed with the bend a and hook b, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BENJAMIN D. REED.
Witnesses:
