WILLIAM W. PLOWMAN, OF JEWELL, KANSAS.
TUG-LOOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 8, 1908.
Application filed July 6, 1907. Serial No. 382,494.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. PLOW- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jewell city, in the county of Jewell, State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tug-Loops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to tug loops and is designed for the purpose of holding the ends of long tugs against the short tugs of a harness. Without the use of some such means, the end of the long tug soon becomes curled outwardly and not only presents a very unsightly appearance, but soon becomes considerably worn.
The tug loop embodied in my invention is of such construction that it may be applied to any tug now in use and readily removed therefrom or adjusted thereon whenever occasion requires and hence it may be laced upon the market as an article by itsel In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the loop applied to a harness tug, Fig. 2 is a similar view but in detail and showing the loopremoved from the tug, Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the loop showing the same closed, and, Fig. 4 is a similar view but showing the loop open.
As shown in the accompanying drawings the loop is formed in part of a single strand of wire bent at op osite sides of its middle as at 6 to form paral el portions 7 which extend vertically and at right angles to the middle portion of the wire and these portions 7 are bent as at 8 to form forwardly and right angularly extending portions 9, the portions 7 as well as the portions 9 being in parallel relation. The portions 9 are bent as at 10 to form downwardly and right angularly extending portions 11 which, adjacent their lower ends are bent to form portions 12 which extend inwardly toward each other and which have their extreme ends bent downwardly and rearwardly as at 13 in spaced parallel relation with respect to each other.
A U-shaped bail 14 is pivoted at the end of its arms as at 15 to the middle portion of the loop and pivoted as at 16 between the end portions 13 is a cam finger lever 17 provided in its forward edge with a notch 18 in which the connecting ortion of the bail 14 is engaged when the 00p is in use.
In using the loop, the bail 14 is swung downwardly and the loop engaged over the short tug and theend of the long tug of the harness the loop then being swung upwardly and engaged in the notch 18 in the cam finger lever 17 this lever being at such time in substantially horizontal position. After such engagement of the connecting portion of the bail in the notch 18, the lever is swung upwardly and the loop is clamped upon the tugs and serves to hold the end of the long tug securely against the short tug. When the cam lever is swung upwardly as stated above, the point of engagement of the bail with the lever is in a plane above the oint of pivotal connection of the lever with t e loop and consequently the lever is securely held in such position until it is desired to shift or remove the bail when the operation above mentioned is reversed.
The lever arm 17 when in closed position as shown in Fig. 3 is disposed between the side members 11-11 which position locates the notch 18 above the line of the pivot 16 so that when the lever 17 is in closed position the loop 14 will be locked to the frame, and prevent accidental displacement.
What is claimed, is
1. A device of the class described formed from a single section of wire bent centrally into U shape to form spaced vertical sides and the spaced sides again bent into U shape at right angles to the first mentioned bend and with the terminals thereof extending inwardly, a loop swinging from the section of wire at its first bend, and a catch lever swinging from the inwardly extended ends of the terminals and provided with a recess engaging over the loop.
2. A device of the class described comprising two U shaped portions spaced a art with the terminals at one side connecte by a transverse portion and the terminals at the other side extending inwardly and thence bent at right angles to the inwardly turned portions, a loop swinging from the transverse portion, and a catch lever swinging between the inwardly turned terminals and In testimony whereof, I afliX my signaprolrl ided ivith a notch engaging thehloo and ture, in presence of two witnesses.
Wit a ever arm extenc in t ere rom whereby when the lever arm is actuated the WILLIAM PLOVMAN' 5 catch will draw the two portions of the U Witnesses:
shaped members toward each other and lock W. T. LOWE,
them in that position. 1 E. S. EVANS.
