Description
` l UNITED STATES PATENT rrrcn.
WILLIAM B. BEMENT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEIVIENTIN STANDS FOR MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 35,433, dated June 3, 1862.
` letters of reference marked thereon, constitute great variety of machinery; and its nature consists in constructing the supporting-structures of' machines with a cabinet or tool-receptacle formed therein by casting them in one entire piece, for adding an important utility, as well as great strength and durability, to any machine to which it is applied, and without increase of expense, all as will be hereinafter seen. i
To enable persons skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and carry out the same, I will proceed to describe it as follows, after rst stating that my invention is applicable to a great variety of machines.
The supporting-structures for the machines shown in the drawings are seen at A, B, C, and Din each of the gures. The supportingstructure is to be cast in one piece entire and in any form desired which will be suitable to receive the various movements of the machine, and to add great strength and combine elegance and beauty in its appearance, and at the same time not add to its expense and saving the cost of toolchests, a suitable pattern is made, and of the form which the supportingstructure is to be cast, so that the same may be nicely molded and cast by any competent foundryman;
The cabinet or toolholder may have yshelves cast therein, as seen at a a', or apartments otherwise arranged for adding great strength to the machine, to prevent recoil when in use,
and to receive and hold all the tools and implements used about the machine, thus' saving the time of machine and trouble of operator frequently running from machine to bench and other parts of the shop in search of tools, al-
ways lostin the old way, and always in place where my within-described improvement is adopted, by there being a convenient place to receive them and everything in its place. Thus each machine has all its tools for its use in the .most convenient placethat is, within the machine itself-and in utilizing space therefor, which has been heretofore useless.
A door, seen at b c d e, is to be east and suitably hinged, as seen at t', to the supportingstructure to neatly inclose the cabinet, add beauty to the machine, and for exclusion of dust, and which may also be provided with an efcient lock for the safe-keeping of the tools and implements stowed therein and for protecting them from fire.
It vwill be seen that by my invention the various portions of the supporting-structure may be of less' thickness and weight, and yet more substantial, than old machines with usual strength, which is resultant from the various bracing shapes susceptible of being imparted solidly to the supporting-structure. The necessary partitions which are cast in the cabinet add both convenience and strength to the supporting-structure by reason of solidly uniting the shelves, sides, partitions, and ends of the supporting-structure in one entire piece.
The use of my invention is obvious from the preceding description of construction, and consequently leaves for further exemplication its advantages, some of which consist, first, in
improving and beautifying the entire machine v in which my invention is incorporated; sixth, by increase of shelves and partitions the greater is the strength of supportingstructure; seventh, in saving the expense of tool-chests and their room on the benches and Iioors of shops; eighth, in rendering room about shops heretofore used for tool-chests useful for other purposes; ninth, in preventing the hinderance and inconvenience of tool chests or holders about the shops; tenth, in the tool-cabinet occupying no extra room, and being embodied in the supportingstructure without enlargement of required room for the machine, thereby and consequently utilizing space heretofore useless; eleventh, in constituting the machine a safe in which its tools are secure from loss or damage by lire; twelfth, in lessening the price of insurance on the many valuable tools used in various manufacturing establishments;
vthirteenth, in embracing all these important advantagesin one and the same machine Without additional expense thereto. Other advantages might be named which are resultant from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I Will state my claim as follows:
The main supporting-structure of machines, having acabinet or' safe tool-receptacle formed therein when cast in one entire piece, essentially in the manner and for the purposes set forth and described.
XVM. B. BEMEN'I.
