Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
CHARLES GULATH, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOUR, ASSGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO J ACOB E. KRUCKER, OF SAME PLACE.
ENVELOPE.
PECIFICATION orming part of Letters Patent No. 354,080, dated December '7, 1886.
Application filed March S, 1886. Serial No.194.4(l9. (No model.)
T aZZ whont it may conccrn:
Be itvknown .that I, CHRLES GULATH, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvenient in Envelopes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.1'eference being had to the accoinpanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which- I Figurel shows my envelope opened out, and looking at the inside. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are perspective views illustrating` the operation of v fo'lding the parts, and Fig. 5 shows the back of the envelope when folded complete.
[5 Myinvention relates to an niprovement on, the envelope shown, descrihed, and claimed in the application for Letters Patent of the United States of Jacob E. Krucker, filed 18th of January, 1886, and nuxnbered 188,977.
My invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the clainl.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the body of the envelope, having end tlaps, B, and side fiaps, O D. The endflaps are slit to form,
as in the application referred to, lookingtongues E. The side flap, O, is slit, as in the application referred to, to form tongues F FV, the tongue F being provided with slots G to receivethelocking-tonguesE. Thefiap D, in-
stead of being provided with the slots, as in said application, is cut out at H to form a T-head, I, connected to the flap by a neek, J.
In folding the envelope the end flaps, B, are first folded over on the body, as shown in Fig. 2, and the tongues E turned up, as indicated. The fiap D is next folded over, as shown in Fig. 3, the ncckJ fitting` between the tongues E. The fiap O is next folded over, the tongues E entering the slots G, and then being bent over beneath the tongnes F', as shownin Fig. 4. `The tongues F' are next bent down, as shown in Fig. 5, holding the locking-tongues.
The parts of the envelope cross-lined, as at M, are gummed, and are thus eausedto adhere 4 5 to the parts upon which they fold.
By making the T-head on the fiap D to receive the tongues E the envelope can/he made and folded entirely by 1na('.hincry,`(with the exception of the tlap O, which is not folded until after the envelope is put to usa) which is not the case with the slots in the fiap E, as in said application, as it Would be impracticable by machinery to insert the tongues E through the slots.
I elairn as my-inventio'n- The combination, with the end flaps, each having a tongue, of the side fiaps, one ot' which is provided with a Thead, whose neck receives said tongues, substantially as shown and 60 described, and for the purpose set forth.
CH AS. GULATH.
In presence of- GEo. H. KNIGHT, EDW. S. KNIGHT.
