NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM KIBBY, or WARSAW, nEN'rUoKY.
FENCE-CLAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 353,072, dated November 23, 1886.
Application filed July 27, 1886.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. KIRBY, 0 Warsaw, in the county of Gallatin and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and Improved Fence-Clamp, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which o Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of a wire-picket fence, showing the application of my improved fence-clamp. Fig. 2 is a detail side elevation of the clamp, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on line as w in Fig. 1
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, easily-applied, and efficient clamp to be temporarily attached to wire-picket fences, for stretching the panels of the fence preparatory to securing them to the post, and for holding the panels under tension while they are being secured.
My invention consists in a bar having formed therein a series of angled notches for receiving the fence-wires, and provided with a handle for convenience in applying it to and removing it from the fence, and having a pair of chains for attachment to mechanism for tightening the fence-panehal-l as hereinafter more fully described. The clamp is formed of the bar A, of iron,
steel, or other suitable material, and is provided with a series of angled notches, a, which are adapted to slip down over the wires of the fence between two of the pickets, the number of notches and the distance between them be- Serial No. 209,227. (No model.)
ing arranged to correspond with the wires of the fence to be stretched. For convenience in handling, the bar A-is provided with a handle, B, and two chains, 0, are secured by their ends to the bar.
The chains 0 lead to any convenient mechanism for tightening the panels of the fence. After one panel has been strained and secured the chains 0 are loosened and the bar Ais lifted from the fence-wires and transferred to a new panel, and this operation is repeated in the case of each panel of the fence.
My improvement obviates the necessity of U employing bolts in fastening the clamp to the wires of the fence, and'saves the time usually employed in tightening and loosening the clamping-bolts.
I am aware that a fence-clamp has been composed of two bars secured together by clamp-bolts, hooks embracing said bars and having chains leading to the operating mechanism; also, that a board fence has been provided with a bar notched to receive the panels between the posts and prevent warping of the said panels; and I do not claim the same as of my invention.
Having thus'deseribed my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A fence-clamp formed of the bar A, provided with angled notches a, and having the handle B and the tightening-chains C, substantially as shown and described.
' WILLIAM H. KIRBY.
