SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 607,410, dated July 12, 1898.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLEs H. FLANA GAN, residing at Southville, and EDMOND MARTIN, residing at Potsdam, in the county of St. Lawrence and State of New York, citizens of the United States, have invented a new and useful Fence, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in fences.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of wire fences, more especially the means for connecting the wires to the end posts and for enabling them to be maintained at the proper tension.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fence constructed in accordance with this invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are detail sectional views illustrating the manner of attaching the fence-wires to the end posts. Fig.A e is a detail perspective view of one of the wire-tighteners. Fig. 5 is a similar view of one of the buttons. j
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings. i
l vdesignates a series of fence-wires connected with end posts 2 and 3 and consisting of twisted strands, as illustratedin Fig. l of the accompanying drawings, but single wires may be employed, if desired. The fencewires are supportedby an intermediate post 4 and inclined braces 5 and are spaced at intervals by stays 6.
The post 2 is provided with a series of horizontal perforations 7, receiving shanks S of buttons 9, which are provided with heads arranged on the exterior of the post and covering the adjacent ends of the perforations. The shank 8 is rounded adjacent to the head to fit the perforation, and its end is attened and provided with a perforation l0 for the reception of the adjacent end of the fence-wire, which is passed through the perforation and twisted, as shown. By this construction the fence-wires are firmly secured to the post 2 and may be readily detached when desired.
The post 3 is provided with horizontal perforations for the reception of screws 1l of Wire-tighteners 12, each of which consists of a screw l1 and a sleeve 13, which is connected with the adjacent end of a fence-wire. The sleeve has a longitudinal bore le, terminating short of the outer end 15 to provide a solid outer portion and interiorly threaded to receive the screw 1l, and the solid outer portion is flattened at the end and perforated to receive the fence-wire and enable the same to be readily attached to the sleeve. The fencewire after being passed through the perforation of the sleeve is twisted and thereby secured to the same. The screw is provided at its outer end with a head 16, having an eye adapted to receive a suitable tool for rotating the screw, and a plate or washer 17 is interposed between the head of the screw and the post. The screw and the sleeve form an efiicient tension device and enable the fencewires to be maintained at the desired tension.
The invention has the following advantages: The wire-tighteners are simple, strong, and durable and form efficient tension devices for enabling the fence-wires to be stretched to the desired degree of tightness, and they are readily applied to a fence-post and to the fence-wires. The buttons form efficient fastening devices for securing the fence-wires to a fence-post. They are readily applied to the latter, and they permit the fence-wires to be readily detached from the post when the said fence-wires are slackened.
Changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may `be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
