To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, IVILLIAM J. MONT- GOMERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Crenshaw, in the county of Panola and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire- Fence Stretchers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention is an improved device for stretching Woven wire fence fabric for securing the same to fence posts, the object of the invention being to provide an improved stretcher which is extremely simple and cheap, is very strong and durable, very readily operated and which firmly grips the fence fabric and is not liable to slip thereon when in use.

The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a wire fence stretcher constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the same in use; Fig. 2 is a vertical central sectional view of the which, when in use is opposed to one side of the stretcher bar, is provided at its lower end with a bevel 15.

At the center and near the ends of the stretcher bar are U-shaped clip yokes 16, the ends of which are secured to the front and rear edges of the stretcher bar by means of bolts 17. The central portion of each clip yoke is provided with a threaded opening which is engaged by a clamping screw 18. The clip yokes project beyond one side of the stretcher bar and are adapted to be passed through meshes of the fencing fabric B so that the fencing fabric may be caused to bear against the stretcher bar and the clamp bar is then passed down through the clip yokes so that the fence fabric is between opposing sides of the stretcher bar and clamp bar. The bevel 15 on the inner side of the clamp bar at the lower end thereof greatly facilitates the insertion of the clamp bar in the clip yokes and enables the clamp bar to slip freely over the fence fabric. When the clamp bar has thus been placed the screws 18 are tightened so that they bear against the reinforcing plate on the same; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view outer side of the clamp bar and press the of the same on the plane indicated by the latter against the stretcher bar and hence line 6-6 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4; is a detail cause the fence fabric to be firmly clamped perspective view of the clamp bar, showing the inner side thereof or that side which is presented to the stretcher bar.

In accordance with my invention I provide a stretcher bar 1 which, in practice, is preferably made of hard wood and is of suitable dimensions. A pair of clips 2 are pivotally connected to the stretcher bar near the upper and lower ends thereof as by means of bolts 3. Chains 4 are connected to these clips and the chains are also connected to a ring or link 5 which may be engaged by the hook 6 of a block 7 to form a part of a stretching tackle 8, the other block 9 of the stretching tackle being provided with a hook 10 which may be secured by means of a chain 11 or other suitable device to a braced post or other like object, indicated at A, in the line of the fence. I also provide the clamp bar 12 which is somewhat shorter than the stretcher bar and is also made of hard wood. The outer side of the clamp bar is covered by a reinforcing plate 13 which is secured in place by means of rivets or other suitable devices 141. This reinforcing plate is of suitable thickness. The inner side of the clamp bar,

between the stretcher bar and the clamp bar so that they cannot slip thereon. The reinforcing plate greatly strengthens the clamp bar, prevents the clamp bar from being worn by the clamping screws 18 and also makes the clamp bar rigid and adds greatly to the strength and rigidity of the stretcher bar when the clamp bar is clamped thereto and, hence, the clamp bar and the stretcher bar are prevented from bending under the stress applied thereto when stretching the wire fabric and all portions of the wire fabric are, hence, stretched alike.

The ends of the clips 2 on*the side of the stretcher bar 1 from which the clip yokes 16 project, are embedded in said side of the stretcher bar so that said side of the stretcher bar presents a smooth, unobstructed surface which greatly facilitates the insertion and removal of the clamp bar.

Having thus described my invention I claim:

The herein described wire stretcher embodying a stretcher bar, clip yokes disposed at the center and near the ends of the stretcher bar and projecting from one side thereof, clips having their ends secured to the stretcher bar near the ends of the latter, the portions of the clips on the side of the stretcher bar from which the clip yokes projectbeing embedded in said side of the stretcher bar so that the same presents on that side a smooth, unobstructed surface, stretcher chains connected to the clips clamping screws engaging threaded openings in the clip yokes and a wooden cla 1nping bar for insertion in the clip yokes and to bear snugly on one side of the stretcher bar, the said clamping bar being provided with a bevel on its inner side at its lower Copies of this patent may be obtained for end and being also provided on its outer side with a metallic reinforcing plate which extends from end to end of the clamping bar against which the ends of the clamping screws hear when the clamping bar is clamped against the stretcher bar.
