JACK-SCREW.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.352,362, dated November!), 1886.

Application filed January 27, 1886. Serial No. 189,891.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OBADIAH SEELY, of the city of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Jack Screws, of

which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improvement in that class ofjack-screws or lifting-jacks which are composed of a base or standard and alift- 1o ing-screw which works in a nut secured to the base or standard, and which are provided with means for carrying the jackscrew about and for attaching the capstan-bar to theimplement.

My invention has the object to provide a r 5 simple device for carrying the jack-screw conveniently and for attaching the capstan-bar to the same; and my invention consists of the improvements which will be hereinafter fully v set forth, and pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a jack-screw provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a sectional e1evation at right angles to- Fig. 1.

As shown in the drawings, the cavity or bore ofthe handle Eextends from end to end of the handle, and thelower end of the bar rests upon a lug or support, f, formed at the lower to end of the standard underneath the handle. If desired, however, the lower end of the handle may be closed for the purpose of supporting the bar, and in that case the lug f is dispensed with.

The jack-screw is moved about by taking hold of the handle E. When the bar D is not required for turning the screw, it is placed in the hollow handle, as represented in thedrawings, and in this manner it is removably attaohed to the jack-screw in a simple and expeditious manner, thereby preventing the bar from being misplaced or lost.

I claim as my invention' In a jack-screw, a base or standard, A, pro vided with a hollow handle, E, adapted to receive the capstan-bar, and provided at both ends with webs 0, whereby it is secured to the base A, and forming between the webs e a rigid handle, by which the jack-screw can be carried about, substantially as set forth.
