Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 17, 1905.
Application filed June 10, 1905. Serial No. 26 L683.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALFRED 0. SMITH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Dobbs Ferry, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination- .iools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combination-tools, and has for its object to provide a simple, convenient, powerful, durable, and efficient tool of this character which is adapted to be used as a screw-jack, plain vise, or pipe-vise at will.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a view in elevation of one side of the device. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the opposite side of the device. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section. Fig. i is an end elevation. Fig. 5 is a top plan view.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 represents an inverted-yoke-shaped frame comprising vertical parallel standards 2, connected at their upper ends by a cross-piece 3 and at their lower ends by a base-plate 4, which latter is provided with openings 5 for the passage of suitable fastenings to secure the device to a floor or other suitable fixed support.
integral with the cross-piece 3 is a guidesleeve 6, provided with a vertical slot 7 at one side thereof, and arranged below said sleeve 6 is another guide-sleeve 8, carried by a cross bar or piece 9, supported by the standards 2. Mounted for vertical movement in these guidesleeves 6 and 8 is a screw shaft or shank 10, provided at its upper end with a lifting-head 11 and carrying a lug or pin 12, projecting into the slot 7, whereby said shank or shaft is held from rotary movement, but is permitted to slide freely in a vertical plane through the two sleeves 6 and 8. The sleeveG is provided at one side with a stationary jaw 13, adapted to cooperate with a movable jaw 14, carried by the head 11.
Supported by the sleeve 8 and engaging said shaft between the cross-bars 3 and 9 is an operating-nut 15, whose threads are properly formed to engage the threads of the shaft. Above this nut is a swiveled collar 16, which bears upon the upper edge of the nut. An
l Vhen the dog is in looking engagement with one of the recesses, the nut may be turned in either direction by swinging the lever in a horizontal plane, and by successive adjustments of the lever to engage different recesses the nut may be intermittently rotated to move the shaft 10 up or down, thus adjusting the head 11 and jaw 14: toward and from the guide-sleeve 6 and jaw 13. By this means the head 11 is adapted to be raised and lowered to serve the function of a lifting-jack and to move the jaw 14 toward and from the jaw 13 to form a plain vise for clamping various objects to be repaired or otherwise treated. In order to reduce friction and permit easy action of the nut 15, antifriction bearing-balls 21 may be interposed between the same and the collar 8 and swiveled sleeve 16.
On the base-plate i is a fixed jaw 22, provided with a toothed segmental recess 23, located immediately below a screw-shaft 10. This jaw 22 is adapted to receive pipes, bars, and other cylindrical objects which cannot be firmly clamped between the jaws 13 and 14:. The pipe or other object to be hold is forced into engagement with the jaw 22 by the lower end of the screw-shaft 10, which is thus adapted to be employed as a coactingclamping-jaw.
From the foregoing description the construction and mode of operation of the device will be readily understood, and it will be seen that it provides a combination-tool which is designed to serve the triple function of a wagon or other vehicle-jack, a plain vise, and a pipe-vise, and may be used for either pur' pose at will, thus producing a tool which may be conveniently employed in wagon and carriage repositories, automobile-garages, and other similar establishments for removing the wheels of vehicles for lubrication and various kinds of repair work.
Having thusdescribed the invention, what I claim is- 1. A combination-tool of the character described, comprising a frame having upper and lower fixed jaws, a screw-shaft mounted in the frame and provided at its upper end with a lifting-head and jaw, said jaw being adapted to cooperate with the upper fixed jaw and the lower end of the screw with the lower fixed jaw to form Vises, and means for operating the screw-shaft.
2. A combination-tool of the character described comprising a frame having a guidesleeve provided with a slot therein, and carrying a fixed jaw, a shaft slidable in said sleeve a lifting-head and a jaw to cooperate with said fixed jaw, a nut supported by the frame and engaging the shaft, a swiveled collar, and an 5 operating-lever pivoted to said collar and provided With a dog to engage and turn the nut.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
