(NQ Model.) V
` B. J. HIGGINS- NEGKTIE .PASTENER.
No. 352,130. l Patented Nov. 9, 1886.

' UNITED STATESl BOYNTON J.
PATENT OFFICE.
HIGGINS, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE` HALF TO ISAAC H. RANDALL, OF SAME PLACE.
NECKTlE-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentrNo. 352,130, dated November 9, 17886.
Application filed April 3. 1886. Serial No. 197,726. (No model.) A
Be it known that I, BoYNroN J. HIGGINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Mas: sachusetts, have invented a new and useful Necktie-Fastener, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. My invention relates to a fastener which may be readily Aapplied to neckties of a com`` the necktie, the spring-wire or clasp having. been thrust upward. Fig. 3 is a plan or top view of the plate without the spring-wire or clasp. Fig. 4 is a view of the outer facefof the fastener, being that face which is to be against the neckt-ie-vback. Fig. 5 shows the inner face of the plate of the fastener. Fig. 6 shows the spring-wire or clasp.
The plateA, or bodyof the fastener, may be of one piece, and may be struck up out of thin sheet metal. It is provided with a raised portion or guard, a, an opening, b, three prongs, c, extending outward, and two projections, d and e, extending inward. The prongs c are to enter the neckt-ieback and to be bentdown upon the same, inclosing the back between the prongs and the plate A and holding the fastener firmly on the necktie, as illustrated in Fig. 1, the necktie-back being indicated by the dotted lines f. The raised portion aand the opening b allow the spring-wire or clasp B to lie between the upper or raised portion and the necktie-back, while it extends over the lower part of the plate, this raisedeportion a serving as a guard to prevent the spring- Wire or clasp from being bent inward. Each of the projections d and e has a hole to receive The clasp B may be formed of one piece of wire, being of the nature of a spring, so that the two limbs g and It have a tendency, when .pressed toward each other, to spread apart.
One limb, g, is of sufficient length to slide the 4required distance while held in the projections d and e, and the other limb, h, of a length to be conveniently grasped below the projection e. At the upper end of the clasp the wire thereof forms a loop or opening, t', smaller than the head of the collar-button, and below this an opening, j, sufficiently large `to receive said head. The limb h is bent or formed, whereby it is provided with a hook at 1:, as shown.
The fastener having been secured by means of the prongs c to the necktie-back, as specitied` above, in operation the spring-wire or clasp is slid upward, so as toallow the head of the collar-button to enter the opening j. It is then pulled downward, so that the upper part of Vthe clasp passes behind the` buttonhead and the hook lo below the projection e.
Thus the necktie is securely held, since the button-head cannot pass through the opening formed by the upper part of the clasp, and the upper edge of the guard a or the clasp slide upward, since the hookk engages with the end or outer edge of the projection e.
I claim as my invention- A1. In combination with a plate, A, pro vided with projections d and e, having the openings therein specified, a clasp, B, having the two limbs g and 7i, forming the smaller loop or opening, t', and the larger opening, j,sub stantially asI and for the purposes set forth.
2. In combination with the platel A, provided with the projections d and e, raised vportion or guard a, and prongs c, the springwire or clasp B, lhaving the.two limbs g and h, forming the loop or smaller opening, i, and the larger opening,j, and provided with a hook, k, substantially as specified.
BoYN'roN J. IIIGGINs.
