The invention relates to an installation for closing the end of a gas conduit opening into a chimney, and is particularly applicable to the chimneys of cement works, which are not used continuously.
cement works and more generally, in installations using a rotary furnace for treating material heated by a burner, the gases issuing from the furnace are generally sent to a plant for preheating this material in which the gas and material ow in counter-current, the plant also having a blower for the gases.
When the furnace is lit, the Volatile material in the still cold gases is 'liable to condense on the walls of the preheater. Because of this, a bypass conduit is disposed at the outlet of the furnace. This conduit sends the gases to a chimney and may be closed by a register when the plant is operating normally. Conversely, the preheater may be isolated by another register.
In the case of a breakdown of the blower or accidents in the preheater necessitating its isolation, it must be possible to open the register of the bypass conduit quickly, to send the gases to the chimney.
The registers that are generally used are shutters turning about an axis or movable panels, which descend perpendicularly to the axis of the conduit in order to close it. They then slide between Vertical guides and are applied to a seat in the form of a groove formed on the bottom wall of the conduit. As the register remains closed for long periods of operation of the furnace, dust may accumulate in the guides and grooves and hamper theraising of the register. Similarly, when the register is open, dust may accumulate in the groove and hamper the free descent of the register to its bottom.
To remedy these disadvantages, the invention relates to an installation for closing the end of a gas conduit opening into a chimney, comprising a seat formed on the periphery of the end of the conduit along a plane inclined towards the chimney, a movable register that can be applied to the seat so as to close the conduit, a means for raising the register, an element for suspending the top of the register from` the raising means, and a means for pushing the top of the register against the seat when the register is in the bottom position opposite the seat.
The invention will now be described with reference to a particular embodiment given by Way of example and shown in the drawings.
FIG. 1 is a front view of the system along I-I in FIG. 2;
FIG. 2 is a section along II-II in FIG.. 1, the register being in the top position, and
FIG. 3 is a plan view in a section along lV-IV in FIG. 2;
FIG. 4 shows in plan the end of the conduit 1 opening into a chimney 2 by means of a connection hood 3.
A veitical recess 4 (FIG. 2), above the end of the conduit, communicates with the latter by its bottom. A register 5, slidable in the recess 4, is suspended by two rods 6 from a crossbar 7 actuated by a raising means such as a Winch (not shown). The bottoms of the rods 6 pivot on two spindles 8, which are parallel with the register and are mounted on the top of the latter so that the register is free to pivot about these axes.
The end of the conduit 1 is designed to vform a seat 9 situated in a plane inclined towards the bottom of the chimney 2. Two stops 10, which bear during the vertical movement of the register on two vertical guides 11 in the recess 4, are secured to the top of the register 5. The length of the stops 10 is such that the top of the back 12 of the register 5 comes into contact with the top of the seat 9 when the register has descended to the bottom position.
As the seat 9 is inclined towards the chimney 1, the end of the register is deflected during its descent, and its centre of gravity is displaced towards the chimney with respect to the suspension spindle 8 kept at a constant distance from the guides 11 by the stops 10, so that the register is applied against the seat 9 by the resultant of its own weight.
An asbestos collar 13 disposed on the periphery of the seat 9 is crushed by the register and forms a seal between the conduit 1 and` the chimney 2.
To prevent the end 14 of the register 5 from sliding along the seat 9 during the whole of the descending movement of the register, the suspension spindle 8 is displaced towards the enclosure 2 with respect to the plane parallel to the bearing face passing through the centre of gravity of the register, so that the latter adopts a slope a little greater than that of the seat 9 in the top position shown in FIG. 3. In this way the end 14 of the register cornes into contact with the seat 9 only at the end of the descending movement of the register, the displacement of the spindle 8 being such that the difference between the slope of the suspended register and that of the seat 9 causes, by the displacement of the centre of gravity of the register, sufficient force of application of the register against the seat 9.
In order that the top of the register and the stop 10 may not be liable to be jammed between the seat 9 and the guide 11, stops 15 are secured to the rods 6 to limit the descending movement of the register by bearing on supports 16 secured to the top of the recess 4. These stops 15 enable the raising means of the crossbar 7 to be unloaded when the register must remain in the bottom position.
The bottom of the seat 9 is extended by an inclined plane 17 along which dust falls as far as the bottom of the chimney 2, from which it is recovered and reintroduced into the furnace. The register 5 is composed of a metal-reinforced concrete slab 20, in which are secured vertical sections 18, which act as supports for a refractory covering 19 on the side of the conduit. The refractory covering 19 is thus alone in contact with the hot gases passing through the conduit during the normal operation of the furnace, and it protects the concrete 20, while being freely expandable with respect to the sections 18.
The invention is not, of course, limited to the details of the embodiment that has just been described, and which may be modified without going beyond the scope of the invention. For example, the stops 10 may be replaced by any other thrust means disposed on the register of on the wall of the enclosure 2 and able to apply the top of the register against the seat 9 when the register is in the bottom position.
What is claimed is:
l. An instalation for closing the end of a gas conduit opening into a chimney comprising a seat on the periphery of the end of the conduit inclined toward the chimney, a movable register for seating on said seat to close the conduit, a recess disposed above said seat opening at its lower end toward said seat, means for raising the register in said recess, said means suspending the register freely in said recess by its upper edge, a stop on the upper edge of the register and a fixed vertical guide engaging said stop during movement of the register, said stop and said guide forcing the upper part of the register against said seat when the register is in conduit closing position.
2. A closing installation as claimed in claim 1 the bottom of said seat `being extended by a plane inclined towards the bottom of the chimney.
3. A closing installation as claimed in claim 1 said seat of the register having a deformable collar forming a seal on which the register rests.
4. An installation as described in claim 1, said means for raising the register including a cross-bar and at least one rod secured to said bar and mounted on a spindle secured to the top of the register. Y l
5. A closing installation as claimed in claim 4, the pivot spindle for the suspension rod on the register being displaced away from the seat with respect to the plane parallel to the bearing face of the register and passing through the centre of gravity of the register.
6. A closing installation as claimed in claim 4,v said rod for suspension of the register has va stop engaging a fixed support when the register is in 'closing position.
