Description

L. W. HELLER BOILER FURNACE Oct. 13, 1931.
Filed July 24, 1928 FI GB INVENTOR BY 9 /Mu ATTORNEYS Patented Oct. 13, 1931 PATENT OFFICE LEwIs'w. HELLER, or OAK HARBOR, omo,
ASSIGNOR TO FULLER LEHIGH. COMPANY,
OF FULLERTON, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE BOILER FURNACE Application filed July 24,
This invention relates to a stoker fired boiler furnace that isprovided with'wall cooling tubes and an ash pit that extends from the lower portion of the furnace. The m-- vention relates particularly to means forclosing thespace between the lower portion of the furnace wall and the ash pit.
The invention will be understood from the description in'coiinection with the accomr m panying drawings, in which Fig. 1 15 3) vertical section partly broken away showlng an illustrative embodiment of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a section along the line 2 -2 of Fig.
1;'and.Figs. 3 and 4 are edge and front views, 5 respectively, of some of the details.
In thedrawings reference character 1 indicates a'stoker fired furnace and the stoker therefor is shown in outline at Q. The Walls of the furnace are provided with water cool- 20 ing tubes. Some of the said wall tubes are shown at 3. The tubes are shown as be ng covered with blocks 4 on the inside of the furnace, which blocks may be attached to the tubes in any convenientor well known manner.
The wall of the furnace is provided with water tubes '5, the lower ends of which are curved outwardly, and enter a lower header 6 that is connected to the water circulation system of the boiler not shown) by means of thetube'7. The Wall tubes are covered with blocks 8 that may be attached to the tubes in the usual way. The invention is illustrated in connection with the rear wall of the furnacabut is applicable also to the other walls of the furnace.
An ash pit 9 extends from the lower portion of the furnace in such a position that ash and clinker falling from the rear lower end of the stoker 2 may enter the ash pit. Crusher rolls 11 are indicated in the ash pit for breaking; up the clinker as it passes through, and the i-z-ormal discharge of refuse passes either between or to the outside of these rolls. Gates or aprons 10 are provided which may be fixed or may be hinged for opening'at will to permit greater area of pass-age. p
in installations of this character, difficultics sometimes arise because of the space 1928. Serial No. 294,984.
that is left between the lower portion of the wall of the furnace and the castings therebelow, this space being left to permit the expansion and contraction due to heating and cooling. By the present invention this space is closed in such a manner that expansion is' permitted and the castings are shielded from the heat of the furnace. A series of blocks 12 (Figs. 3 and 4) are attached to the lower curved. portions of some of the wall tubes 5. These blocks 12 are provided with curved portions 13which fitagainst the tubes and the blocks are held to the tubes in any convenient manner. The blocks are provided on opposite sides with downwardly sloping slots or grooves 14 that terminate a short distance from the bottom of the blocks. Flat curved castings 15 are suspended from the blocks 12 by means of pivots 16 on'the castings which are slipped into the grooves 14 in the blocks 12. The lower edges of these castings 15 extend along the side of the ash pit 9 and are free to swing horizontally short distances so that as the wall and the lower ends of the tubes 5 move up and down the castings 15 slide short distances to accommodate these movements. The castings can be easily removed simply by lifting the same out of the grooves 14 and broken or worn castings can be readily replaced.
I claim:
1. in a stoker fired boiler furnace, a wall having water'tubes therein curved outwardly at the bottom, blocks attached to said tubes at the lower portions thereof and plates suspended from said blocks by means of a pivoted connection.
in a stoker fired boiler furnace, a wall having water tubes therein curved outwardly at the bottom. blocks attached to said tubes at the lower portions thereof and plates suspended from said blocks by means of a pivoted connection, and an ash pit below said furnace.
3. In a stoker fired boiler furnace, a wall having water tubes therein curved outwardly at the bottom, blocks attached to said tubes at the lower portions thereof and plates suspended from said blocks by means of a pivoted connection, and an ash pit below said furnace, said plates extending across the space between said tubes and said ash pit.
41-. In a Stoker fired boiler furnace, a wall having water tubes therein curved outward ly at the bottom and plates suspended from the lower portions of said tubes, and being free to swing horizontally.
5. in a stoker fired boiler furnace, a rear wall having water tubes therein curved outwardly at the bottom, blocks with grooves therein attached to said tubes, and plates suspended from said blocks and having pivots entering said grooves.
6. In a Stoker fired boiler furnace, a wall having water tubes therein curved outwardly at the bottom, blocks with rooves therein attached to said tubes, and p ates suspended from said blocks by means of pivots extending into said grooves.
7. ln a Stoker fired boiler furnace, a wall having water tubes therein curved outwardly. at the bottom and plates suspended from the lower portions of said tubes, and an ash pit below said furnace, said plates extending across the space between said tubes and said ash pit, the lower edges of said plates being adapted to slide along one side of said ash pit upon movement otithe tubes.
8. lln a Stoker fired boiler furnace, a wall having water tubes therein and plates pivotally suspended from the lower portions of said tubes.
9. In a Stoker fired boiler furnace, a wall having water tubes therein and loosely swinging plates suspended from the lower portions of said tubes.
