Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a carton for containing a roll of a web-shaped material and comprising four sidewalls forming a sleeve, which are held together by a joint field and end closing flaps.
  • the carton according to the invention is characterized in that the sidewall, to whose inner side the joint field is attached, is divided by a longitudinal tearable strip into two longitudinal portions, and that the joint field is adapted to serve as cutting edge by being attached only to one of the said portions and to project over this portion inwardly beneath the tearable strip and possibly also inwardly beneath the second one of the two longitudinal portions.
  • the invention provides a very simple carton structure provided with a cutting edge, which is completely closed until the said tearable strip has been removed.
  • FIG. 1 is a plan view of a flattened blank for a carton according to the invention.
  • FIG. 2 is a perspective vie-w of the same carton before it has been completely closed.
  • FIG. 3 is a perspective view of a completely closed carton which is just being opened.
  • IFIG. 4 is a perspective view of a completely open carton with a roll of material placed in it.
  • the carton according to the invention consists of four sidewalls, 1, 2, 3 and 4. These sidewalls are held together by a joint field 5.
  • the outer free edge 6 of the joint field is toothed in the example shown in order to serve effectively as a tearing edge.
  • the sidewall 1 is divided by a longitudinal tearable strip 7 into two longitudinal portions 8 and 9.
  • the said strip 7 is provided by four scribed lines 10 to 13 which do not penetrate the material completely.
  • the two intermediate scribed lines 12 and 13 are formed in the inside of the carton, while the outermost lines 10 and 11 are formed on the outside of the carton.
  • the tearing strip 7 ends in a completely loose tongue 14 which is easy to grip.
  • the sidewalls 1 to 4 are defined by end closing flaps 15 to 22.
  • the flaps 15 and 19 are separated from the longitudinal portion 8 and the tearable strip 7 3,516,587 Patented June 23, 1970 by slits 23 and 24.
  • the joint field 5, which is preferably reinforced on its inside by a coat of hard plastic, is only attached to the longitudinal portion 8. When this jointing has taken place the shape shown in FIG. 2 is obtained. As appears from FIG. 3, the end closing flaps 15 to 22 are then folded inwardly.
  • the joint field 5 is then completely exposed together with the longitudinal portion 8. At its ends the joint field 5 is separated from the sidewall by short slits 25. These extend inwardly to a level with transversal scribed lines 26 to 29.
  • the two lines 26 and 29 which are provided nearest the ends are formed on the outside of the carton, while two intermediate scribed lines 27 and 28 are provided in the inside of the carton.
  • Reference numeral 33 designates a hard plastic strip attached to the inside of the joint field 5 in order to reinforce the cutting edge 6.
  • the invention is not, of course, restricted to the embodiment shown and described above but may be varied within the scope of the subsequent claims.
  • the scribed lines which are laterally displaced in pairs from both sides of the material may be exchanged for perforated lines. Two adjacent scribed lines are in such a case replaced by a single perforated line. Alternatively, only one of two adjacent scribed lines may be replaced by a perforated line, in which case approximately the same tearing is obtained as when two scribed lines are used. Further-more, the shape of the various flaps may of course be varied without exceeding the scope of the invention.
  • a carton for dispensing a roll of web-shaped material having a pair of longitudinal side walls, a top wall, a bottom wall and end flaps therefor to form a closed carton for the web, one of said longitudinal side walls comprising a multilaminar structure, the inner lamina being contiguous with the top wall of the carton and having a longitudinal cutting edge at its free end for severing the web after the carton is opened, the outer lamina being formed of two longitudinally separable sections, the upper section being secured to the inner lamina and the lower section being contiguous with the bottom wall of said carton, said cutting edge being disposed inside the carton and adjacent to the lower section when not in use, so that when said upper and lower sections are separated the inner lamina having the cutting edge and the upper section secured thereto may be released to expose the cutting edge for use in severing the web.
  • a carton as claimed in claim 2 wherein the pair of spaced lines scribed on the inside of said layer are intermediate the pair of spaced lines scribed on the outside of said layer.
  • a carton as claimed in claim 1 wherein the lateral ends of the upper section are separated from its end flaps by slits to permit the upper section to be lifted along with the attached inner lamina after the upper section has been separated from the lower section.
  • a carton for dispensing a roll of web-shaped material having a pair of longitudinal side walls, a top wall, a bottom wall and end flaps therefor to form a closed carton for the Web, one of said longitudinal side walls comprising a multilaminar structure, the inner lamina being contiguous with the top wall of the carton and reinforced along its free edge with a hard plastic material to form a cutting edge for severing the web after the carton is opened, the outer lamina being formed of two longitudinally separable sections, the upper section being secured to the inner lamina and the lower section being contiguous with the bottom wall of said carton, said cutting edge being disposed inside the carton and adjacent to the lower section 4 when not in use, so that when said upper and lower sections are separated the inner lamina having the cutting edge and the upper section secured thereto may be released to expose the cutting edge for use in severing the web.
