0. EH. GILBERT.-
SHOE.
Patented Oct. 26, 1886.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLESH. H. GILBERT, OF BROOKTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,591, dated October 26, 1886. Application filed May 6, 1886. Serial No. 201,368. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. H. GIL- BERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brockton, county of Plymouth, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the'following is a clear and exact description of my invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is improvement in boots and shoes of the style usually known as a button boot, (or shoe.)
I am aware that crimped shoes (buttonboots so called) have previously been made; but those heretofore made involve either, first, the crimping of the material itself second, the insertion of some description of gusset-piece in the button-flap; third, the piecing out of the button-flap, or, fourth, an uncomfortable seam lengthwise over the instep or top part of the boot.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents one side of the quarter or upper of a button-boot with the button-piece cut on, there being an opening at E F H. Fig. 2 represents a piece for insert-ion in the opening E F H. Fig. 3 represents one side of the upper or quarter with the insertion-piece stitched in its place, the button-flap lying over upon the other side, as shown by dotted lines. Fig. 4 represents, the opposite side of the upper or quarter with the button-flap whole and unpieced lying over it.
When the side E K, Fig. 2, is stitched to the side E K, Fig. 1, and the curved side EF H to the curved side E F H, 'thetop and front part of the shoe is thereby fully formed, having the proper crimp or curve, and this is done leaving the button-flap whole, without disfiguring or weakening seams, and also obviating an uncomfortable lengthwise seam over theinstep or top of the foot. As the button-flap is usually on the outer side of the foot, this inserted piece or extension comes on the inside, wherc it is less liable to strain and rupture from the process of buttoning the boot, and is also more concealed from sight. This insertion-piece C may be made of any material used in the manufacture of shoes, but particularly of rubber elastic or goring, so called, this elastic in that position giving to the shoe a peculiar flexibility, which adds greatly to its comfort and value. It is one of the considerations urged that all this can be secured without any additional cost of manufacture, and at an actual saving of stock and labor.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is.
In a button boot or shoe, a quarter including the button-flap cut in one piece, the button-flap being whole or unpieced, having the opening H F E K, for the admission of the insertion'piece O, substantially as'described.
CHARLES H. H. GILBERT.
