' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES JOSEPH IIEYLER, OF SAN JOS, CALIFORNIA.
SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 304,431, dated September 2, 1884.
Application filed May 12, 1884.
To aZ whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES J. HEYLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented a new and useful Shoe, of which the following is a specification,
lreference being had to the accompanying drawings. A
This invention has relation to shoes, and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts as will he hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Figure l is a view in perspective ofthe back stay-piece for shoes. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of a portion of the upper of a shoe, showing the back stay-piece applied; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the outer leather, the leather stay-piece, and lining.
Referring` by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the enter leather of the shoe-upper; B, the back seam, and D the lining. Between the lining and the outer leather at the back seam I place a back staypiece, C, of leather, preferably of the. shape and construction shown in Fig. 1. The heel stay or back stay piece C is notched on the edges, as shown, to give it the proper shape when stitched to place in the shoe. It is sewed in with the stay-seam in the shoe and (No model.)
escallop'ed stitches at the sides of said seam. It is also crimped at the upper end to give it the seanrcurve. The slits and crimping cause the stay-piece to conform to the shape of the shoe. rIhe object of the stay-piece is to prevent the shoe from bursting out in the back or ripping out. The eXtra-thickness takes off the main strain from the seam. J
The shape of the stay-piece may be varied without departing from the character of the invention.
Having thus fully ldescribed my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The combination, with a shoe, ofthe leather CHARLES JOSEPH HEYLER.
