PRINTING-PLATE HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 350,677, dated October 12,1886.

Application filed April 22, 1856. Serial No. 199,865. (No model.)

Be it 'known that I, DIARSHALL J. HUGHES, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Printing-Plate Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which Figure 1 is a plan view. Fig. 2 is a trans verse section taken on linexzv in Fig. 1.. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of one of the clampingplates.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient device for holding printing-plates upon their blocks,to retain them in the proper position in the press, and to prevent their being lifted by the adhesion of the inking-rollers.

My invention. consIsts in a block or series of blocks or bases having their lower corners beveled, and in clamping-plates having opposite edges bent or angled to form lips for embracing the beveled edge of the stereotype or other printing-plate, and the beveled corners of the electrotype block or blocks, one of said bent or angular lips having an adjusting-screw, and the clamping plate being held firmly against the edge of the electrotype-plate and its supporting-block by the furniture employed in locking the block in the chase. The lower corners of the block A, upon which the electrotype B is mounted, are beveled, forming an inclined surface, a, corresponding in shape with the beveled edge of the electrotype B. The edge of the eleetrotype-plate B is beveled in the usual way, and the back of the plate is planed to a surface parallel with the faces of the top, and the face of the plate is supported type high by the block A. To opposite edges of the block A and plate B, and, if desirable, to opposite ends,are fitted clamping-plates 0, having opposite lipedges bent or angled to form the inclined lips I) I), which project from the same face of the plate 0. hen the clamping-plates G are placed against the edges of the block A and plate B, and the block and clamping plates are locked in the chase by means of the ordinary furniture in the usual way, the inclined lips I) 'b engage the beveled edges of the plate B and the beveled corners a of the block A, and clamp the plate B and block A firmly together by forcing the plate .down upon the block and the block up against the plate, so that the plate cannot shift its position on the block, and will be prevented from being lifted by the ink-rollers as they are rolled over the face of the plate; \Vhere the edges of the electrot-ype-plate are rough and uneven, or where it is desirable to adjust the plate on the block within narrow limits, the clamping-plates O are provided with adjusting-screws c, which pass through the lip b and bear against the beveled edge of the electro type-plate, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

Myiimprovement is equally applicable to single blocks and series of blocks or compound blocks, and'it may be employed in holding stereotypeplates, elect1.'oty )e-plates, and all other plates used in printing.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, with the bevel-edged printing-plate B, of the block A, having the beveled corners a, and the clamping-plates 0, having inclined lips I) b on opposite edges thereof,and provided with adjusting-screws c, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. As an improved article of manufacture, a holder for printing-plates formed of a plate, 0, having inclined lips Z) I) on opposite edges thereof, one of which lips is provided with an adjusting screw, substantially as herein shown and described.
