W. W. HODSDEN.
BARREL COVER. No. 350,247. Patented 0011.5, 1886.
INVENTOR 927/ 923% BY J m ATTORNEYS.
WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM WIRT HODSDEN, OF SMITHFIELD, VIRGINIA.
BARREL-COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 350,247, dated October 5, 1886.
Application filed May '1, 1886. Serial No. 201,434. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM WIRT Hons- DEN, of Smithfield, in the county of Isle of Wight and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Barrel-Cow ers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view showing the barrelcover closed. Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the barrel-cover partly open. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the application of the cover to a barrel.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the dilferent figures of the drawings.
The object of my invention is to provide a removable cover for barrels, which may be opened without lifting the cover or any part thereof from the top of the barrel.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
The stationary part A of the cover is formed of a board dish cut away upon one edge, so that its straight edge extends beyond the cen ter of the barrel-cover. To the board A is secured a wide hoop, B, adapted to receive the end of the barrel to which the cover is applied.
To the stationary part A of the cover is pivoted the movable part 0 on the screw (1. The movable part of the cover is similar in form to the stationary part, having a circular periphery, and is made a little greater than a semicircle to overlap the stationary part when the cover is closed, and to receive the pivotal screw a.
The convex edge of the movable part 0 of the cover is provided with a downwardly-projecting rim, b, which extends over the hoop B.
A stop-pin, 0, projects from the upper surface of the stationary part of the cover, near the straight edge thereof. and in the movable part 0 of the cover are formed two notches, d d, at opposite sides of the pivot, which are capable of receiving the stop-pin c. A curved handle, 6', secured to the movable part of the cover, extends over the notch d. By grasping the bandle e and turning the movable part of the cover on the pivotal screw a the cover may be opened more or less, as may be required. The notch d permits of turning the movable part of the cover on its pivot, so that the straight edges of the two parts of the cover will be parallel when the cover is open, and the notch d permits of arranging the straight edges of the cover parallel with each other when the cover is closed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, in a barrel cover, of the stationary part A, provided with the hoop B, adapted to receive the end of the barrel, and having the stop-pin c projecting from the upper face thereof, and the movable part 0, having notches d d, and the downwardly-projecting rim b,'substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, in a barrel cover, of the stationary part A, provided with the hoop B, adapted to receive the end of the barrel, and having the stop pin a projecting from the upper face thereof, the movable part 0, having notches d d, and the downwardly-projecting rim 6, and the handle e, substantially as herein shown and described.
\VM. WIRT HODSDEN.
