STRAW-FCARRIER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No; 349,507, dated September 21, 1886.

Application filed February 25, 1856.

To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that I, J. JOSEPH LINK, of Ohioago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Straw-Carriers, of which the following is a specification, to wit:

Thisinvention relates to straw-carriers; and it consists in certain novel peculiarities of the construction and arrangement of the same, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention pertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and use, referring to the accompanying drawings, which form a part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a part of my carrier-belt; Fig. 2, a similar view in detail of one of the side straps. Figs. 3 andet are top and bottom views of the metal caps for the ends of the cross-bars, and Fig. 5 is a view of the metal pieces used in securing the bars to the center strap.

My carrier is formed of a series of endless straps or belts, (marked B and B,) the former being those at the outer sides and the latter at the center of the carrier. 7 The side straps or belts, B, are made double, or, in other words, they are formed of two pieces of leather or other suitable flexible material, laid one upon the other and secured together by cement, while the center straps or belts are formed of a single thickness of material, asshown. The cross bars or laths D are of the usual form,

- and are confined to the side straps or belts by means of suitable metal caps, which consist of a top plate, A, formed with side flanges, O, which embrace and firmly hold the lath, as shown in the drawings. Each cap is also formed with a strap or bottom plate, H, which passes over the end of the lath and is bent back to form a tongue parallel with the top plate, A, which tongue is inserted in the side straps, B, suitable spaces, F, being formed between the two strips forming said straps to receive and hold the tongues, as clearly seen in in the caps, these engaged with. the double straps, and the whole secured by ascrew passed down through the top plate, A, through the lath, and into the tongue. This firmly holds the parts together, and at the same time allows any lath to be quickly and easily removed for repairs, while the side flanges, O, prevent any tendency to split. The formation of the side straps in two parts and the insertion of the tonguesH between them leaves a smooth and even surface upon the under side of the belt and renders the carrier more durable. The caps and the straps E will be .formed of any desired metal and either cast or wrought, as may be deemed advisable, and such other changes in detail as are required in practice will be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. Ina straw-carrier, the combination, with the side straps and cross-slats, of the securingcaps embracing the ends of the slats and provided with tongues embedded in the material of the belts or straps, whereby the device is given a smooth lower surface, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a straw-carrier, the combination, with the straps B, made in two parts, with the spaces F formed at intervals betweenthem, of the slats D and their caps formed with the flanges O and tongues H, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
