Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
E. F. BASSETT, OF SEYMOUR, CONNECTICUT.
IMPRovED MATTRESS.
Speclication forming part of Letters Patent No. 34,985, dated April l5, 1862.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, E. F. BAssETT, ot' Seymour, in the county of New llaven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Mattress; and I dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, iu which- Figure l represents a longitudinal vertical section of my invention when laid down dat. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures. i
The object of this invention is to prevent the mattress being matted down or crushed by constant use in one place on its surface and to keep it of a uniform thickness the whole length.
The invention consists in making the Inattress endless in such a manner that its survface can be changed or moved along every time the bed is made up, or as often as may be required, thus presenting a different place in the surface for the body to rest upon and keeping the bed of a uniform thickness the whole length.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
The tick A of my mattress B is made in the form of a hollow cylinder, as clearly represented in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The ends of this cylinder or the edges of the mattress are secured to the rest of the tick. in the ordinary manner, and after the stuiiing is introduced and when the tick has been closed on all sides it is fastened by tacking in the ordinary manner.
When this mattress is used, it is laid down as shown in Fig. l ofthe drawings, and it will be 'noticed that when the same is thus laid down it is double throughout its wholelcngth.
The objection madeto the use of an ordinary mattress, however well made, is that the same becomes crushed and hard in the iniddle and remains nearly the original thickness at each end, thus rendering the bed uneven and uncomfortable. This objection is obviated by the use of my endless mattress. Wfhcn the bed is made up, or whenever it is considered desirable, the surface of my mattress can be changed by moving it along or turn` ing it lengthwise a short distance. `By these means a new surface is presented to the body, and the thickness of the mattress can be preserved uniform throughout its whole length.
It is obvious that itis not necessary toma-ke an endless mattress such as herein described of the same thickness as an ordinary mattress, since it is doubled up when used, a-nd consequently not more than half the thickness of an ordinary mattress will be required to pro duce the same result. The cost of my endless mattress, therefore, will not exceed that of an ordinary mattress, and it will be much Inore durable and comfortable than any mattress of the ordinary construction.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*
An endless mattress B, constructed substantially as shown and described.
E. F. BASSETT.`
