SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 348,488, dated August 31,1886.

Application filed February 23, 1886. Serial No. 192,870.

Be it known that I, IVALTER G. BROWN- soN, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Blowers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved blower. Figs. 2 and 3 are vertical sections through the blower, showing it in position on a firc-place,and with the dampers closed and opened respectively.

My invention is an improved blower for use on fireplaces; and it consists in features of noveltyhereinafterfullydescribed,and pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a fireplace having an ordinary grate, B, as usual.

0 represents the blower, which I have Shown of rectangular shape; but I do not wish to confine myself in this respect, as it may be made of any desired form or shape. It has the usual bottom opening, 0, located at the rear of the blower and in front of the grate.

D represents a damper hinged to the lower part of the blower, preferably by a rod, E, around which the inner edge of the damper is bent, and which has a handle, F, preferably formed by turning over the end of the rod. The handle, however, may be attached to the damper in any desired way. The damper may be turned down in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or it may be turned up into the position shown in Fig. 3. It is turned in the former position when the fire is lighted and it is desired to have the draft enter and pass up through the fuel in the grate, as shown by the arrows in Fig. 2. In this position the damper acts to cause the air to enter and pass through the grate, andserves every office of a solid or rigid bottom on the blower.

IVhen itis desired to rid the grate of ashes, the damper is turned into the position shown in Fig. 3, so as to leave an airspace between the bottom of the blower and the grate, as Shown in Fig. 3. By ridding the grate of (No model.)

ashes in the usual way it will be understood that the ashes are liable to come out into the room, owing to the body of ashes in the grate above the point they are disturbed or poked to clean the grate. A blower as ordinarily constructed would only serve to cause the ashes to escape into the room and prevent them from going up the chimney, as part of them would otherwise do; but by having the blower provided with a damper and turning it into the position shown in Fig. 3, there will be a strong air-draft through the space between the blower and the grate,which will re sult in the line ashes (that would otherwise escape into the room) being drawn up the chimney, as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 3. The blower thus becomes useful to pre vent the escaping of ashes into the room when the grate is cleaned. The bottom of the ends of the blower have ribs N, against which the ends of the damper rest when the damper is turned down, so as to form rests and strong support for the damper.

I claim as my invention 1. A blower open at its bottom, provided with a damper for closing the bottom, substantiall y as described.

2. The combination, with a lire-place and its grate, of a blower and a damper between the blower and the grate, substantially as described.

3. The combination, with a fire-place and its grate, of a blower and pivoted or hinged damper between the blower and the grate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4.. The combination, with a blower open at its bottom, of the damper I), across the bottom, and the rod 15, having a handle or crank, F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

5. A blower open at its bottom, provided with ribs N at the bottom of its ends, and a damper for closing the bottom, adapted to rest on the ribs and to be supported thereby when the damper is closed, substantially as described.
