SPECIFICATION forming part o f Letters Patent No. 346,640, dated August 3, 1886.
v l Application tiled April 16, 1886. Serial No. 199,098. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS LUDLOW OASE, Rear-Admiral United States Navy, of
the town of Bristol, in the county of Bristol and State of Rhode Island, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvementsin Flower- Presses, and I do hereby declare the following` to be a full. clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willenableothers skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. l
My invention relates to an improvement in devices for pressing leaves, flowers, ferns, and other similar articles, the object of the same being to provide means whereby articles such as above described may be placed in astate of preservation by means of a press, which,While it is portable, is capable of imparting sufficient pressure toperfectly press and preserve the hlowers in the condition sought to be accomplished.
A further object is to provide a device of the above character which shall be simple and economical .in construction and durable and efficient in use; and With these ends in view my invention consists in the cert-ain features of construction and combinations of'parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Intthe accompanying drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of my invention, and Fig. 2is a top plan View thereof, showing the levers or Winches as applied when tightening the press. Y,
A and A represent the respective upper and lower sections of the press, the same being provided centrally at each end with the holes B, through which pass the screw-threaded bolts O, to which are applied the thumb-screw bolts D. The said upper and Ylower sections are formed with their inner faces flat and even, wherebya regular pressure is assured upon the articles placed between them, While the outer faces thereof are formed with a horizontally-curved or ovalshape, whereby the cords E, which embrace the same, may effectively secure a firm grip upon every portion thereof,
and consequently insure a steady pressure up on all portions ofthe sections which they einbrace. The levers'ior Winches F are provided at one end with the heads G, whereby they are prevented from slipping away from the cords E when they are twisted therein. It will be readily observed -that the object of the cords and levers is to enable the sections to be forced toward each other by means of such torsional strain as may be effected by them, and when the cords are tightly-bound against the sections, and they are brought as close together as possible, they are held in such position by means ofthe thumb-screw bolts D, which may be tightened with comparatively little effort.
The space between the sections may be filled with any suitable materialdsueh as blotters or strips of pasteboard-'between which the tiowers and leaves may be placed. A
The cords embracing. the sections may be ornamental in color, and the construction of the entire device such as to make it a neat and attractive portable device for the purposes such as above described.
Having fully described my invention.what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
l. In a press, the combination, with upper and lower sections, of cords adapted to en1 brace the sections, Winches to tighten the f cords, screw-bolts passing through the ends of the sections, and thumb-screw nuts on the ends ofthe bolts for securing the sections against movement, substantially as described.l
In testimony' whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
AUGUSTUS LUDLOV CASE.
