Description

UNITED STATES PATENT JOHN MITCHELL STAMP, OF GRASS VALLEY, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND PETER JOHNSTON, OF SAME PLACE.
'IMPROVED TOOL FOR LACING BELTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 100.6Si6, dated March l5, 1870.
.To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. M. STAM?, of Grass y Valley, Nevada county, in the State of Calihandle for holding the punch in position while being struck with the hammer, and the punch forms a T-head to the awl and hook for drawing the lace through the hole in the belt, or
tightening up thelacing or sewing in the ends of the lace, instead of tying those ends in a knot, as heretofore frequently practiced.
In the drawings, a is the punch, of the required size for the hole to be made in the belt. From the shank portion of the punch a the body b of the awl c extends, and upon one side of the said body b is ahook, d. The awl c is adapted to receive the tapering end of the lace, the same being inserted through the eye e after the awl has been thrust through lthe hole in the belt, the T-head formed by the punch a forming a handle, by means of which the awl can be withdrawn and the lace pulled through the hole in the belt. The hook d is employed to draw up the lacing tightly, and the T-head also forms a handle to the same, so that the operator can easily apply considerable force to draw up the lacing.
Figure 1 shows the side of the said instrument or tool, and Fig. 2 isa View endwise of the punch.
I claim as my invention- The punch united with the awl and belthook in one instrument, in the manner and forv the purposes set forth.
