DOLL'S HEAD WITH ILLUMINABLE NOSE AND A WHISTLE Filed NOV. 29, 1966 United States Patent O U.S. Cl. 46-228 1 Claim ABSTRACT F THE DISCLOSURE The present invention relates to an animatable doll and refers more particularly to the head of a doll made of resilient material which when subjected to light pressure, will emit a sound and ignite a lamp.

An object of the present invention is the provision of a dolls head of the described type which is most unusual in its appearance and operation and which can serve for entertainment and amusement of young and old.

Other objects of the present invention will become apparent in the course of the following specification.

In the accomplishment of the objectives of the present invention, it was found desirable to provide a dolls head preferably of an animal-like comic appearance which is made of a hollow thin layer of rubber or other suitable resilient material. Close to the simulated mouth of the doll a whistle is located through which sounds, preferably of a high pitched comic variety can be emitted. The dolls head also carries one or more small electric bulbs. In the example illustrated, a bulb is placed upon the tip of the nose of the doll, but obviously bulbs may be located elsewhere, namely, the bulbs may serve as substitutes for the dolls eyes and/ or the bulb may be placed in the middle of the forehead of the doll. The Whistle is blown when slight pressure is exerted upon the dolls head. The same ow of air actuates an air switch which is connected toa pocket size battery of the usual type and which is also connected withwires leading to the electric bulb. The diaphragm of the air switch when moved by a flow of air will provide a connection between the battery and the electric bulb to ignite the bulb and will interrupt this connection when air'pressure has ceased.

The invention will appear more clearly from the following detailed' description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing showing by way of example a preferred embodiment of the inventive idea:

The dolls head shown in the drawing comprises a front portion 3, a rear portion 4 and a neck portion 5. The il` lustrated head may be placed by its neck portion 5 upon any suitable body of the doll which is not illustrated since it does not constitute a part of the present invention.

The front portion 3 and the neck 5 are preferably cast in one piece of a thin layer of rubber or other suitable resilient material. The rear p0rtion 4 includes a flat wall 6 enclosed by flanges 7. The wall 6 has an opening 8 to provide access to the interior of the head. However, the opening 8 is tightly closed by a cover 9 so as to avoid escape of air when the head is compressed. r

In the example illustrated the dolls head has the appearance of a funny animal having a forehead 10 and eyes 11 which are painted or impressed upon an outer surfact of the head. The animal has curved projecting cheek portions 12 and a round outwardly extending nose 13. rfhe month 14 of the animal 4with the tusks 15 is also impressed upon the outer surface of the head. In the embodiment illustrated, the tip of the nose 13 carries an electric bulb 16, while a whistle 17 is located close to and below the mouth 14. The top of the head carries a metal cap 18 which is covered by a funny hat 19.

An elongated casing or tube 20 is suspended from the inner top surface of the head by an annular adhesive sheet 21 which firmly encloses the tubular body 20 and which is firmly attached to the inner surface of the head. The tube 20 is of the size and shape enabling it to contain and hold a small electrical battery 22 of a type generally used for flashlights and the like. The battery 22 is firmly pressed against contacts 23 by a spiral spring 24 carried upon the cap 18. The cap 18 has inner screw threads adapted to mesh with outer screw threads provided upon the tubular member 20 and extending through and somewhat above an opening provided upon the outer surface of the dolls head. The cap 18 carries the funny hat 19 which conceals the cap from an observer.

An air switch carried by the tube 20 includes a movable diaphragm 25 located in a casing 26 and carrying contacts 27. The casing 26 has openings 28 to admit the ow of air actuating the diaphragm 2S. Contacts 27 are connected with the electric bulb 16 by wires 29. The bulb 13 is enclosed by suitable translucent cover. In the example illustrated, the cover may be red so that the toy will have a red nose.

The operation is as follows:

The dolls head is air-tight, so that any slight pressure imparted upon any suitable section of the head, such as pressure against the cover 9 or pressure exerted upon the cheeks 12, will produce a current of air, which will be blown through the whistle-,17. The same iiow of air will pass through the openings 28 and will move the diaphragm 25 from an inoperative position to an operative position wherein a connection between the contacts 23 and the contacts 27 is provided. Then electrical current will flow from the battery 22 through the contacts 23 and 27 and the wires 29 to the bulb 16, so that the bulb 16 will be lit. When a flow of air has been exhausted, the diaphragm 25 will sink interrupting the connection between the contacts 23 and 27, so that the bulb 16 will be extinguished. Then the user can again apply pressure to the head to actuate the whistle 17 and light the bulb 16. This procedure can be repeated as many times as it is desired. It is apparent that only a small amount of pressure is necessary to actuate the device and that pressure can be applied 1n very rapid succession.

Thus, according to the present invention, a highly animated and funny dolls head is produced wherein intermittent sound and light effects are most effectively combined to provide a highly amusing toy.
