KEY-HOLE GUARD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N... 345,396, dated July 13, 1886.

Application filed April 15, 1886.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, KATY RUMETSOI'I, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Fran cisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Key-Hole Guard, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to that class of devices that are employed to protect the key-hole of a door and prevent the look from being picked; and my invention consists of two half-round rods or bars jointed together at suitable intervals, the flat sides of which move one upon the other when thrust through a key-hole, andform a projecting toe upon the opposite side of the 'door, in which position it is held by a key passing-through opposite slots in the guard.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side view of my key-hole guard with the two arms shut down ilatwise, the one upon the other. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same as applied to a key-hole.

The two arms a and b are composed of a half-round or nearly half-round rod of' metal. The two flat portions of the rod are placed face to face, and are connected at their outer ends by a rule-joint, 0. Near the center of the lower arm or arm, a, is formed a joint, d, which permits the connecting portion of the arm to move only at right angles to and perpendicular with said lower arm. A joint, 0, is formed in the arm I) at a point nearly opposite the joint (I of the arm a, and of the same character as that of d, and midway between the joint 6 and the end joint is formed a knee-joint, f, so that the two sections may easily be folded together when the toe or foot is formed at the end of the rod, as shown in Fig. 2. A small flat spring, 9, is connected to the arm I) just in front of the joint f, which lifts up that portion of the arm from the arm a at that point, so that the end loop or toe can be easily formed when the guard is inserted in the key-hole. A clip, h, is connected to Serial No. 199,014. (No model.)

In practice, when the guard is in the posi- 5c tion in the key-hole shown in Fig. 1, by placing the index-finger of the hand in. the loop 2' upon the lower half of the guard a, and push ing with the thumb against the curved arm j at the end of the arms I), this arm will slide along the arm a until the two jointed arms of b are I folded up and assume the position at the opposite side of the door or key-hole, the door having been previously locked by the ordinary bolt, and forms the upwardly-extending foot or toe, as shown in-Fig. 2, when a key, K,-is placed in the parallel slots Z Z, formed through both arms, and a padlock inserted through the hole in thekey K, and the first section of the jointed arms a folded down, which prevents all access to the lock or bolt of the door through the keyhole.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to seen re by letters Patent,

The combination of the arms a and b, 7 jointed together at the outer end and clipped together at the opposite end, and the retaining-key for the arms, said arm a consisting of two sections jointed at d, said arm I) consist- 7 ing of the sectionsjointed at e and f, and the said sections a I) being further provided with slots Z l for the retainingkey, substantially as specified and shown.

2. The combination of the sectional jointed 8;: arms a and I), having opposing flat faces, said arms beingjointed together at one end,elipped together at the other,and provided with curved handles 1 and j, the interposed spring 9, and the key adapted to pass through slots in the arms, as shown and set forth.
