Description
GQH. News. LOCK-COCK.
No. 195,724. Patented ot.z,1e77.
WITAIEEEEE IPM/EAITDR /gLmc/L UNITED STATES PATENT GEEIcE.
GEORGE H. NOYES, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS OF HIS RIGHT TO E. S. NOYES AND I?. W. NOYES, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN LOCK-COCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,724, dated October 2, 1877; application iled August 23, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEO. H. NOYEs, of Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Lock- Cock; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention consists in providing a cheap,
simple, and perfect means for locking a stopcock.
My device is shown in the accompanying drawing by one figure, which is a front elevation view of a stop-cock with my locking device attached thereto.
In the f1gure,Ais the shell of the stop-cock. B is the plug. D is the stem of the plug. O
is a lug on the" side of the shell A. E E is- .the wrench for turning the plug. The ligure shows the cock open.
My invention consists in jointing the wrench E E at e, and providing the part E or handle of the wrench with a mortise similar to the mortise in a hasp, so that when the part E' is bent down it allows the lug C, which is, in effect, a staple, to pass through the mortise in the handle E', where it can be retained by the lock F. The plug may be locked open or shut, as desired; the figure shows it locked open. But when the hasp-like handle E ofthe wrench is unlocked from the staple-like lug C, and brought to the position shown by dotted lines, the plug B can be turned so as to shut the cock. The wrench is then lifted from the stem j D, and set back on it again in such a position i that the hasp-like handle E can again engage Q with the lug C. When the part E' of the g wrench is locked down the part E cannot be 1 lifted from the stem D. Consequently the poi sition of the plug B cannot be disturbed.
As an equivalent of the wrench E E', the i plug B can be provided with two jointed and hasp-like arms set at right angles to each other, or when it is only desirable to lock the cock one way that is, either only open or shutone jointed hasp-like arm to the plug B would be required.
I prefer the jointed hasp-like wrench E E', as it is the simplest and fit for universal use. By its use all stop-cock shells could be made with the lug C, and the wrench could be applied to such as it is desirable to lock.
What I claim as new is- In combination with the plug B of a stopcock, the jointed hasp-like wrench E E', or its equivalent, for engaging with a staple-like lug, O, 011 the shell of said cock, substantially as and for the purposes mentioned.
In testimony whereof I, the said GEORGE H. NoYEs, have hereunto set my hand.
GEORGE H. NOYES.
