COMBINED WRENCH AND LOOK FOR SHUT-OFF COCKS.
The invention has for its principal object to provide a simple and inexpensive devicev which will be efiicient as a lock to prevent unauthorized tampering with valves to open and close the same and which may serve as a suitable wrench for operating the valve when not in use as a lock.
The above and other objects and the novel features of the invention will be apparent from the following description, taken in connection with the drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a shut-off cock showing applied thereto the device embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is an end elevation, illustrating the device serving its locking function; Fig. 8 is an end elevation, illustrating the device serving its wrench function; Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the device including the key and padlock for locking the device to the cock.
Referring to the drawing, the valve may be of any ordinary or preferred construction, and in the illustration comprises a casing 10 having the usual turning'plug 11 fitting therein the latter being provided with a stem 12 which extends outside the casing 10 and is square or angular in shape. The hexagon extensions of the casing 10 are of the usual construction and suitably threaded to receive and couple the ends of piping such as the pipe 15.
The combined locking device and wrench comprises a part which fits the stem 12 of the plug 11 and parts connected therewith and surrounding the valve casing or pipe leading thereto and locked together by a A flat plate 16 having a square or angularly shaped hole 17 extending therethrough is integrally secured to a U-shaped member comprising the parallel limbs or legs 18 and 19 which are spaced apart a sufficient distance to straddle the end of the casing 10 or the pipe 15 leading thereto. The plate 16 and the Specification of Letters Patent.
legs 18, 19 are arranged at right angles to each other the plate being integrally joined to the U-shaped member at the bend in the latter. Near their ends the legs 18, 19 have rectangular holes 20 and 21 extending therethrough to receive the narrow portion 22 of the bolt or key comprising a bar K which has a T-head 23 larger in dimension than the holes 20, 21 to limit its movement through the hole 21. A hole 24L extends through the key at the end opposite the head 23 and when in looking position it extends beyond the opposite leg 18 so that the hole 24 will be outside to receive the hasp 25 of a padlock 1?. r
The use of the device will be apparent from the drawing and foregoing description. When in use as a means for locking theplug 11 in a closed or open position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the stem 12 is fitted into the hole 17 with the U-shaped part placed in position so that the leg members 18 and 19 will be disposed on opposite sides of a part of the valve or a pipe attached thereto. The part 22 of the key K may then be slipped through the holes 20, 21 and the shackle 25 passed through the hole.24 in the end of the key. Thus the plate 16 is locked in position so that it cannot turn and the plug is therefore locked in a position so that it cannot be turned. Under certain condit-ions it is not desirable to use the lock and key, the device being sufficient in itself to lock the plug against accidental rotation under such conditions.
The fact that the opening 17 extends through the plate 16 and the arms 18, 19 are arranged at right angles thereto, makes it possible to reverse the device and use the same as a wrench. hen inuse as a wrench, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1 and in end elevation in Fig. 3, the opening 17 in the plate 16 is fitted over the stem 12 and the U-shaped part of the device placed in position so that the parallel members 18, 19 will extend upwardly from the valve. The legs 18, 19 provide a convenient grip and lever for turning the part 16 which fits the valve stem.
It will be seen that I have provided a simple, inexpensive device which may readily be applied to lock the valve and may also be used as a wrench.
Various modifications are possible without departing from the spirit of the inven- Patented July 21, 1914.

tion and therefore I do not Wish to belirnited to the exact details as shown and described.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1, The combination with a valve casing having a cutolf plug therein, of a combined lock and Wrench therefor comprising a plate having an opening therethrough, parallel members integral With said plate, extending at right angles thereto and spaced apart so as to fit on opposite sides of a part leading from the valve casing, and means for locking the outer ends of said members together, said plate and members integral therewith being reversible on the valve stem toserve as a Wrench, the said parallel members forming the gri of the Wrench. 7 y I V 2. A combined locking device and Wrench of the class described, comprising a substan ti'ally U-shapedmember and an apertured plate integrally joined to said member at the bend in the U and extending laterally there from, said plate being reversible and the limbs of said member serving as a handle when the device is used as a Wrench.
' 3. A device of the class described, comprising a substantially U-shaped member having holes at the ends of the limbs there of, a headed fastening bar extending be- J tween said limbs and having a shank adapted to pass through the holes'at the ends of 1 I said limbs, means engaging the end of the iiopies of this 'patentma y be obtained for live cents shank of said bar and cooperatin with one of said limbs to lock the bar in place, and a plate integral With said member at the bend therein and extending laterally therefrom and having a part adapted to fit a portion i of a valve.
4. .A' combined locking device and Wrench for a valve, comprising a substantially U- shaped member having holes extending vthrough the ends of the limbs thereof, a
T-headed fastening bar having a shank adapted to'extend through the holes in said limbs to connect the latter, the head of said bar engaging the outer side of one limb to limit its movement in one direction, and said shank having a hole in the end thereofpro-- jecti'ngbeyond the outer side of the other limb,
In testimony whereof I afiix signav ture in presence oftWo Witnesses.
