CHARLES H. THOMPSON, or MUNOIE, INDIANA.
LOCK FQR STOP-COCKS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. April 30, 1907.
Amilication filed July 30,1906. Serial No. 328,409.
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. THOMP- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Muncie, in the county of Delaware and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Lock for Stop-Cocks, of which the followingfs a specification. 1 V The invention relates to-ineans for locking the stop cocks of air pipes, and the like against accidental or unwarranted movement, and
j the principal object is to provide an exceedingly simple article of this character, which can be readily applied to. the ordinary type of structure, will constitiiteraneffective lock for preventin ,the turning. of the valve or cock, and can e easily detached iffd esi t ed.
The, preferred form of construction-is I ,shown in the accompanying drawings, where "Figure 1 is a "side elevation ofithe turn- Cook of an; air brake pipe, showing the locking means applied thereto, *Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view on; the line 2-2 ofFig. 1. F ig. 3-is a longitudinal sectional view through a portion of the structure.
- Similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts ,in all the iigures of the drawings. The cock may be of any Well known form or structure, and includes acasing 3, having operated by a handle crank 5' arranged to 1 annular channel 6*.
The locking device cOiisiQBZof a-pair of jaws 6, pivotally connectedat; one end, as shown at 7, and having eyes or openings 8 at their other ends, adapted to receiifga.- the hasp 9 of a padlock 10. The portions oij the aws, contiguous to the pivoted ends';- are owed outwardly, as;,shown at 11 and thereby form a pi pereceiving.seat :12 that is located partlyqiin each jaw.. "fThe portions :-of' the aws, contiguous to their free ends, are bowed or extended outwardly, as-shown at I so . and receiving the handle 5. v One 'of the 13 to form a transverse" handle deceiving seat '14 that is also lomted partially in each jaw, extending entirely through the same,
' jaws may vfurthernriore be provided "with an car 15 to receive'a holding ch aim or cord that will prevent the device being loshwhen not inuse. a .2 A
As clearly shown in the drawings, tolock the stop cock against rotation, the jawsare arranged so that they will eml race both the pipe and the handle, said. pipe and handle and 14, and the howedportions 11 being received in the channelG. A suitable padlock or other fastener is than engaged in the eyes 8, and effectively secures the jaws toe gether. When so arranged, it will be evident that the handle will be positively locked against rotation, and the stop cock is warranted operation; Moreover, the looking device being located in the'channel is heldagainst movement longitudinally of the .pipe.
Fron the foregoing, it is thought that the tages of the herein described invention'wvill be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will be understood that various'changes in thesize, shape,
proportion, and minor details of construe tion, may be'resorted to without? departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention. 7
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A locking device of the character de scribed, comprising relatively movable pipeembracing jaws having a transversely disposed handle-receiving seat between them, said seat being formed partly in each jaw and comprising transversely coa'cting sockets arranged in their inner opposed faces and extending entirely across said faces fromedge to edge, and means for securing the jaws together.
scribed, comprising hingedly connect fzd aws having outwardly bowed portions contiguous to one end, forininga transverse pipereceiving and outwardly bowed portions contiguous to the other end, forming a transverse handle-receiving "seat, said jaws having abutting portions between the seats and also having lock-receiving eyes or open- 2. In a locking device of the character described, the combination with the ipe, of a turning valve located'therein and having an oilset handle adapted to be placed longitudimall'y 0% 1 with an annular channel disposed at one side thus maintained against accidental or un constructiomuoperation, and many advan- 2. A locking device of the character de being respectively received in the seats 12 the pipe, said pipe being provided 1 of the valve, and a locking device comprisingjaws that'em trace the pipe at one side of the valve and are located in the channel, said jaws also embracing the handle of the turning valve.
4. In a locking device of the character described, the combination with a pipe having an annular channel formed in its outer side, of a turning valve located in the pipe at one side of the channel and having a handle that is movaiile to a position longitudinally of the pipe and transversely of the annular channel, and a locking device located at one side CHARLES H. THOMPSON. YVitnesses:
