UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM T. MERSEREAU, OF ORANGE, NEW JERSEY.
CARPET-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 344,393, dated June 29, 1886.
Application filed May 11, 1886. Serial No. 201,799. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM 'I. Mnnsn- REAU, of Orange, Essex county, New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Device for Fastening Stair-Carpets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of the same, in which- Figurel is a view of a series of stairs, showing the carpet secured in position by the fastener. Fig. 2 is a side sectional view of the invention as applied. Fig. 3 is a top view of a portion of a stair with the carpet and fastener in position.
In the drawings, like letters indicate similar parts of the invention.
The nature of the invention consists in the construction, as more fully hereinafter set forth, of an improved fastener for stair-carpets, the object of the invention being to provide a simple and low-priced device for fastening stair-carpets, by the employment of which the necessity for employing stair-rods is dispensed with.
To enable those skilled in the arts to make and use the invention,I will describe the same.
The fastener consists of a plate of metal, A, provided with a lug or projection, a. The
rear portion of this plateabout one-third the length of the entire plate-is bent up, as at B, at nearly a right angle to the portion A, the plate being curved, as at N, so that when in use this curved portion will have its bearing upon the stair-carpet O at the point where the riser and the tread of the stair meet. The bent-up portion B is provided with the lug or projection b. Both the lugs or projections a and b are provided with openings for the reception of screws, by which the fastener is secured to the stair.
The operation may be thus set forth: The carpet 0 having been laid upon the stairs, two of the fasteners-one for the right-hand side, the second for the left-hand side-are placed over it, the part A upon the tread, the portion B against the riser of the stair, the lugs a andbprojecting beyond the carpet, and being fastened in position by screws entering the uncovered portion of the stair.
Having now described my invention, I claim as new- A fastener for stair-carpets, consisting of the plate A, provided with a lug or projection, a, and having the bent-up portion B, provided with a lug or projection, b, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM T. MERSEREAU.
In presence of- W. V. H. HIoKs, A. SIDNEY DOANE.
