UNITED @IAIEg "PATENT OFFIQE,
FRANCIS A. WINSLOW, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE WINSLOW BROTHERS COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
STAIR.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANCIS A. WINsLow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Stairs, (Case 11,) of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to stairs and is directed particularly toward the construction of a stair which will be of simple and inexpensive construction, which will be as nearly as possible fireproof, and which will be of pleasing appearance. It is, of course, desirable that the stairs should be substantial and durable and the purposes of my invention are secured with this also in mind.
It is a feature of my invention that the main structural portion of the stair which I propose is of metal, preferably sheet metal, and is made up of previously formed units of simple construction, and finishing members which not only enhance the appearance of the stair but also add to their structural durability.
If desired, the main structural portion of the stair may be installed during the construction of a building and the application of the finishing members may be delayed until after the severe usage to which a stair is necessarily put during the work of construction is no longer necessary.
My invention is capable of embodiment in different forms and in the accompanying drawings I have shown several proposed arrangements.
In these drawings Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a gang of steps embodying the features of my invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective view illustrating a detail which will be referred to and Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the plane 3-3 of Fig. 2-.
In the drawings the side plate is shown at 10, the side plates at their lower edges being provided with inwardly turned flanges 43, 43. Extending between the side plates and secured to the flanges at proper intervals are the transverse angle irons 44, 44 each end of which has the horizontal por- Specification of Letters Patent.

tion thereof bent downwardly at an angle equaling the angle of the side plate 10 so that it may be propely secured in face to face relation with the flange 43, as indicated at 45, by means of a suitable rivet 46. The sheet metal units 13 are secured, as indicated in Fig. 1, between the successive cross-bars, the back-risers 15 being secured to the vertical portions of the angle bars and the subtread 14 being secured to the horizontal portions thereof, all by means of rivets 47, 47 as shown in the drawings. The finish members 31 and 32 are applied in this structure by mounting on a cement bedding as illustrated. The manner in which the ends of the horizontal portions of each of the crossbars is turned down is indicated in Figs. 2 and S. A soflit 48 may be employed, if desired, this soflit being secured to the flanges or to the cross-bars, or both, in any desirable manner. In the present instance the soflit is shown as of the expanded metal type, a coating of plaster being provided so that a structure of good appearance may result.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: I
1. In a stair, in combination, a pair of side plates each having an inwardly turned flange at its lower edge, angle bars extending between said side plates, said angle bars having a vertical portion and a horizontal portion, the ends of said horizontal portion being turned down to the angle of said side plate, means for securing said down turned ends to said flange, and tread members secured upon said angle bars.
2. In a stair, in combination, a pair of side plates each having an inwardly turned flange at its lower edge, angle bars extending between said side plates, said angle bars having a vertical portion and a horizontal portion, the ends of said horizontal portion being turned down to the angle of said side plate, means for securing said down turned ends to said flange, risers secured to the vertical portions of said angle bars, and treads secured to the horizontal portions of said angle bars.
3. In a stair, in combination, a pair of side plates each having an inwardly turned flange at its lower edge, angle bars extending between said side plates, said angle bars having o, vertical portion and {L horizontal l being secured to the horizontal portion of portion, the ends oi said horizontal portion the upwardly succeeding angle bar. 10 being turned down to the angle of said side In Witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe plate, means for securing said down turned my name this 28th day of March, A. D 1910.
ends to said flange, and it nietal stair unit FRANCIS A. l VINS-LOVV. comprising a trend and a riser, the riser Witnesses:
being secured to the vertical portion of one E. PAUL, of said angle bars and the associated tread I M. D. MILLNER.
