IIAMILTON L. CAMPBELL, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
STAlR-CARPET FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 615,527, dated December 6, 1898. l replication fnednugua 22, 189s. seal no. eaazoo. (No man.)
To yall whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HAMILTON L. CAMP- BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Stair-Carpet Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and `exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates t-o an improved fastener for securing carpet upon stairs, the object of the invention being to provide a simple and efficient fastener that will hold the carpet firmly in place and from which the carpet can be readily released when it is desired to remove it from the stairs orto shift it thereon to prevent uneven Wear of the carpet.
My invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I is a perspective View of a portion of a stair with carpet'laid thereon and my improved fastener appliedy to hold the carpet in place. Fig. II is an enlarged sectional View taken through the fastener, the parts being shown in the position assumed when the clamping-lever is elevated for the insertion of the carpet. Fig. III is a sectional view taken on a line similar to that of Fig. II and showing the fastener closed and a fragment of carpet clamped within the fastener. Fig. IV is a front perspective view of the fastener, the clamping-lever being shown elevated into the position shown in Fig. II'. Fig. V is a front perspective view of the clamping-lever removed from the body of the fastener. Fig.VI is a front perspective view of the body of the fastener from which the clamping-lever is removed.
l designates the steps of the stai rs,to which my fastener is shown applied, and 2 the risers of such steps.
v 3 is the carpet.
4 designates the back plate of the fastener, the outer end of which is formed with forwardly-extending lips 5, there being a notch 6 between such lips.
7 designates the front spring-plate of the fastener, riveted or otherwise suitably secured to the back plate 4. This front spring-plate is provided with prongs S, that extend Iorwardly from the plate. The prongs shown are in the form of pins seated in the plate 7; but they may be of any other suitable form. Near the outer free end of the plate 7, on its rear face, is a recess 9, formed by the metal being struck up.
l0 is the clamping-lever, having a heel 1l, that fits within the fastener between the front and back plates, and the edge of which heel rests in the recess 9 when the lever 10 is elevated, and thereby the movement of the lever is limited to prevent its being thrown too far back. The ends of the heel l1 extendA beyond the edges of the remainder of the lever lO and are confined on the interior of the lips 5, thereby preventing the escape of the lever from its position between the front and back plates 4 and 7.
The fastener is provided with an aperture l2, that receives a screw or other suitable fastener 13, by means of which it is secured to the risers of the stairs.
The operation of the device is very simple. The fasteners are attached by the screw 13 or other suitable fastening to the stair-risers at a distance apart corresponding to the width of the stair-carpet. In securing the carpet in place the clamping-levers lO are thrown outwardly into the position shown in Figs. II and IV, and the edges of the carpet being placed against the plate 7 the carpet is pressed onto the prongs S, and the clamping-levers then being pressed inwardly they are carried into clamping-lever having a heel arranged be- IOO tween said plates and adapted to seat in said lever having a heel arranged between said recess, substantially as described. plates. adapted to seat in said recess, sub- 3.
