No. 621,257 Claims priority, application Germany, Mar. 10, 1966, D 32,946 Int. Cl. A45c 1/04; A45f 5/02; B65d 85/00 US. Cl. 15052 6 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention concerns a housing, especially for slide rules, which comprises a casing of approximately rectangular cross section which is open at the top and closed at the bottom and consists of a substantially stiff shape-retaining synthetic material while a closure cap or flap of flexible material is firmly connected to the upper portion of the casing for selectively closing and opening the upper end of said casing. The flap has one end thereof provided with perforations while the back side of the casing is provided with protrusions extending through said perforations and connected to the loop extending around the upper portion of the casing, said protrusions connecting the flap to the casing.
The present invention relates to a casing for slide rules. Housings for slide rules and the like are known which comprise an open casing and a separate cap adapted to be placed on said casing, the casing and the cap consisting of the same material.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a casing for slide rules or the like which is particularly wear resistant and has a long life.
It is also an object of this invention to provide a housing for slide rules and the like which is easy to handle.
These and other object and advantages of the invention will appear more clearly from the following specification in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIG. 1 shows the rear view of a housing according to the present invention.
FIG. 2 is a side view and a partial section of the housing according to the invention.
FIG. 3 is a front view and a partial section of the housing according to the invention.
The slide rule housing according to the present invention comprises primarily a substantially stiff shaperetaining casing of synthetic material having an open end edapted to be closed by a cap of flexible material, preferably leather. The cap may be designed in the form of a flap having one end connected to the casing by means of the back side of a loop. In this way the advantages of the capless flap-closable slide rule casing (easy and fast opening and non-detachable cap) is combined with the advantages of a stiff synthetic casing provided with a cap (increased protection against damage, low cost and easy cleaning).
More specifically, referring to the drawing, the housing illustrated therein comprises a casing 1 of synthetic ma- 3,442,314 Patented May 6, 1969 terial which is relatively stiff but still sufiiciently elastic so that an undue breaking of the material will practically be impossible. As synthetic material may be used for instance polyethylene. The casing has substantially the cross section of a rectangle. The width of the casing slightly increases from its closed lower end so as to facilitate the insertion of the slide rule. Within the range of the closed end of the casing there are provided depressions 1b which limit the extent to which the slide rule can be placed into the casing. The open end of easing 1 has a cutout 1e which permit an easy grasping of the inserted slide rule.
In the vicinity of the open end and in the narrow sides of casing 1 there are provided depressions 1c and 1d. On each side of casing 1, the respective depression comprises a fiat portion 1c and a depressed rounded portion 1d. The
' portion 10 of the depression serves for receiving a loop 4 to be described further below, whereas the portion 1d forms a rest for the slide rule in the casing by means of which the slide rule is held laterally. The portion 1d simultaneously serves as abutment for the slide so as to prevent the latter from sliding down into the casing.
The back side of the casing 1 is additionally provided with a boss 6 formed thereon for receiving a supporting ring 3. Furthermore, the back of the casing has formed thereon preferably cylindrical protrusions 1a upon which the cap in the form of a flap 5 of flexible material, preferably leather, is placed, said flap being provided with perforations corresponding to the protrusions 1a. The said protrusions have their end faces fused to the loop 4 likewise consisting of synthetic material, as for instance synthetic leather. The said loop 4 as mentioned above, is located in the depressions 1c provided in the lateral portions of easing 1. The depressions 1c are preferably so deep that the outer surface of said loop is substantially flush with the outer surface of the casing said portions.
The flap 5 which preferably consists of leather is folded over the open end of housing 1 and slipped between loop 4 and the top side of housing 1. In this way the housing 1 is safely closed. The closure can easily be opened by pulling flap 5 out of loop 4 while no danger exists that said flap will get lost.
The back side of flap 5 is provided with a perforation through which extends the boss 6 to which the supporting ring 3 is fastened. This ring additionally and simultaneously positions flap 5. While flap 5 is preferably made of leather, it may also be made of other flexible material, as for instance polyethylene, or a similar material.
It is, of course, to be understood that the present invention is, by no means, limited to the particular construction shown in the drawing.
What I claim is:
1. A housing, especially for slide rules, which includes: a casing having an approximately rectangular cross section and being open at the top and closed at the bottom, said casing being made of a substantially stiff shaperetaining synthetic material, a flap of flexible material firmly connected to the upper portion of said casing for selectively closing and opening the upper end of said casing, and a loop extending around the upper portion of said casing and connecting said flap to said casing.
2. A housing according to claim 1, in which said fiap has one end thereof provided with perforations, while the 3 back side of said casing is provided with protrusions extending through said perforations and being connected to said loop.
3. A housing according to claim 2, in which said protrusions are fused to said loop.
4. A housing according to claim 1, in which the rear side of said casing is provided with a boss extending through said flap, and which includes a supporting ring supported by said boss.
5. A housing according to claim 1, in which the nar- 1 row sides of said casing are provided with depressions for receiving said loop.
6. A housing according to claim 1, in which the outer wall of said casing at the lower portion thereof is provided with inwardly extending protrusions for forming an abutment for said slide rule to be received in'said casing.
