U.S. Cl. 72--250 5 Claims ABSTRACT F THE DISCLOSURE The present disclosure relates to a rolling mill wherein the guides of a rolling mill for rolling structural sections are mounted on the roll chocks. This enables the guides to be set up at the required positions in relation Ito the holes of the rolls, prior to entry of the rolls and guides to the mill. In this way, guide setting at the mill is eliminated, or at least substantially reduced, on a roll change occur ring.
Preferably, stretcher beams are secured between the chocks of a section roll and the guides are adjustably attached to the stretcher beams.
The invention will be more readily understood by way of example from Ithe following description of a structural section mill in accordance therewith, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a front view of the mill stand,
FIGURE 2 is a section on the line lI-II of FIGURE 1, and
FIGURE 3 is a section on the line III--III of FIG- |URE 1.
The strand illustrated in the drawings is intended to be capable of rolling both beam and sections, but it will be appreciated that the invention is not limited to such a combination mill.
The two section rolls 12, 13 are carried in chocks, two of which are shown at 14 in FIGURE 3. As usual the chocks 14 slide in the windows 17 of two housings 15, 16.
The two chocks 14 of the lower roll 13 are connected together by two stretcher beams 18, which extend par allel to the axis of the roll, on either side of the roll. As indicated in FIGURE 2, each stretcher beam 18, 20 has L shaped ends 21 which are dropped into corresponding slots 21A in the chocks 14.
Each of the beams 18, 20 has a lengthwise dovetailslot 22 which receives a number of guides 23. As best shown in FIGURE 3, each guide 23 has a downward projecting part 23A received within slot 22 and held in place by a bolt 24.
The upper guides 25 are pivotally carried on a beam 3,438,236 Patented Apr. 15, 1969 "ice 26, which is carried at its ends in the chocks 14 of the upper roll 12. Each guide 25 is biased upwardly, so that the forward end of the guide is brought in contact with the roll 12, by springs 27 secured between the guide 25 and a rod 28, which is similarly carried at its ends in the upper chocks 14.
Prior to a roll change, the new rolls 12, 13 are set up in a dummy stand, complete with the chocks 14, the beams 20, 26 and the rods 28. The guides 23 are now place in the required positions in relation to the holes 30 of the rolls and secured in place. The upper guides 25 are similarly treated. Thus, when roll change occurs, setting of the guides is eliminated.
As before mentioned, the mill illustrated in the drawings is intended to roll both beam and structural sections.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, we have explained the principle and operation of our invention and have illustrated and described what we consider to represent the best embodiment thereof.
We claim:
1. A mill for rolling structural sections comprising a pair of section rolls, the ends of which are mounted in bearing chocks, the chocks of each roll being connected together by stretcher beams extending; parallel to the roll axes, and guides adjustably mounted on the stretcher beam wherein each beam is formed with a length-wise dove-tail slot and each guide has a projecting part for reception in said slot.
2. A mill according to claim 1 in which the guides are held to the beams with bolts.
3. A mill according to claim 2 in which guides associated with the upper roll are pivotally mounted on their associated beam and are biased upwardly so that the forward end of each guide is brought into contact with the roll.
4. A mill according to claim 3 in which the guides are biased upwardly by springs extending between the guides and a member carried by the chocks.
5. A mill according to claim 1 which is lalso adapted to receive and support rolls for rolling beams.
