UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC HOLZMARK, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
APPARATUS FOR USE IN LAUNDERING PURPOSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 343,636, dated June 15,1886.
Application filed May 2, 1884. Serial No. 130.163.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ISAAC HOLZMARK, of Kansas City, Jackson county, Missouri, have invented a new and useful Apparatus for Use inLaundering Purposes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention seeks to provide a laundering apparatus which combines with and upon the same framing a rubbing washing-machine, a wringer hinged permanently to the tub thereof, and a doubleroller mangle 1h it is also permanently fixed within the framing of the machine above the tub, a removable cover pro vided with a brace, and a hinged cover, said covers being constructed and arranged to form covers for the said mangle, and also adapted to be converted into a table for the same, as
' will be more fully described hereinafter, and
pointedout in the claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the apparatus, showing a portion of the Wringer, the tub, and the mangle-cover broken away to exhibit the internal parts. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation through line 00 00 of Fig. 1, showing the device arranged .for operating the mangle; Fig. 3, a perspective view of the apparatus, showing a piece of cloth passing through the mangle; Fig. 4, a front elevation showing the wringing attachment turned up in position for operation; Fig. 5, a detail view of the manglecovers converted into a table for the mangle.
A A represent the mangle-rollers, journaled within the upright framing-posts m, and adapted to be rotated by the hand-crank d, attached to the journal b. Pressure is applied to said mangle-rollers by turning the thumb-screw G, threaded through the frame-cap h, and attached to the pressure bar it, sliding inthe vertical guides c.
The tub T is provided with vertical sides and a bottom that inclines toward the center, at which point is placed the'waste-water opening W. A lining of metal having circular projections O stamped thereon is secured within the tub by means of thebinding-strips M. The inclined portions of the bottom guide the clothes toward the rubbing-paddles N. These (No model.)
paddles are attached to journal P, which is revolved by'the crank-handle d. The wringer, consisting of the rolls B, provided with a crank, (1, attached to the journal I), and spring pressure-screw G, and clothes-guide H, is permanently hinged to the upper front edge of the tub. By withdrawing the long barf from the openingst' in the upper end of the front tub-braces, H, the tub-cover F may be removed and the wringer turned to an upright position and there held by means of the hook it andlocking-pin Q, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4.
When it is desired to arrange the apparatus for mangling, as shown in Fig. 2, the manglecover 0, hinged at e to the cross bar t, is dropped to a horizontal position, the cover I) for the opposite side of the mangle, having the brace E hinged thereto at R, is removed from its loose fastenings S, and, being provided with small hooks r upon the edge opposite the brace IE, it can be joined at e to the before mentioned mangle-cover G, and, the lower end of the brace E being placed within the socket X, the table is ready for the cloth L. By operating the crank d to and fro the clothes that are placed within the tub T are caught by the revolving paddles N and rubbed against the serrated sides and bottom of said tub until they are sufficiently cleansed.
The braces V, resting upon the base-frame 19, add rigidity to the machine.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to obtain by Letters Patent, 1s
In an apparatus for laundering purposes, the combination of the mangle, its hinged cover 0, and removable cover D, provided with brace E, said covers being constructed and arranged substantially as described, whereby they form the covers of the mangle and are also adapted to be converted into the table for the mangle.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ISAAC HOLZMARK.
