JACOB SHEFFLER, ()F DESELM, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,651 dated July 8, 1873 application filed June 7, 1873.
To all whom "it may concern Be it known that I, JACOB SHEFFLER, of Deselm, in the county of Kankakee and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machines, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a top view of my improved machine. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same taken through the line a: 50, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object. to furnish an improved washing-machine, simple in construction, convenient in use, and effective in operation, washing the clothes quickly and thoroughly, and without injuring them. The invention consists in an improved washingmachine formed of the corrugated and flanged bottom, the rollers or wheels, the pivot, the corrugated roller, its frame and crank, the flanged cylinder and its curved arm, constructed and operating in connection with each other and the tub, as hereinafter fully described.
fine the clothes. Upon the outer part of the upper surface of the false bottom B is formed a ring of corrugations, as shown in Figs. l and 2. F is a roller, which is pivoted to and between the bars -G, the inner ends of which are hinged to the side of the tub A, or to a support attached to said tub. The free ends of the bars G are connected by a round, 9, which serves as a handle for applying pressure to the clothes. One of the journals of the roller F projects, and to it is attached a crank, H, for operating the machine. I is a rotating vertical cylinder, the lower end of which is flanged, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The cylinder I is swiveled at its upper end to the end of the bent or curved arm J, the other end of which is hinged to the side of the tub A, or to a support attached to said tub. The cylinder I is held down upon the bottom B by a hook, K, or other convenient fastening, which hooks upon it near itshinged end.
In using the machine the clothes are placed upon the bottom B around the cylinder I, the handle g is grasped in the left hand to apply pressure, and the roller F is revolved with the right hand by means of the crank H. The cylinder I holds the clothes out so that they will be in proper position to be operated upon by the roller F, the flange of the said cylinder I pushing the lower part of the clothes in beneath the mass, so that they will be continuously turning over. The outer part of the bottom B, as it is rotated by the roller F moves faster than the inner part, so that the clothes will be rubbed as well as pressed, thus washing them very quickly and thoroughly.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An improved washing-machine, formed of the corrugated and flanged bottom B E, the rollers or wheels 0, the pivot D, the corrugated roller F, hinged frame G g, crank H, flanged cylinder I, and curvedarm J, constructed and operating in connection with each other and the tub A, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
