' P. E. GANSZ.
DOOR ROLLER.
No. 343,368. Patented June 8, 1886.
WiTNE55E5= lNV ENTElTiz- ,1 AL I UNITED STA'IES PATENT OFFICE.
PHILIPE. GANSZ, OF LYONS, NEWV YORK.
DOOR-ROLLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 343,368, dated June 8, 1886.
Application filed April 14, 1886.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PHILIP E. GANSZ, of Lyons, in the county of Wayne, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Rollers, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
'This invention relates to the class of doorrollers which are arranged beneath a sliding door to carry thesame by the bottom edge of the door-riding upon said rollers; and the invention consists, essentially, in mounting on the stationary journals two or more rollers adjustable longitudinally thereon, so as to permit of adjusting the width of the tread to'the thickness of the door to be carried on said rollers, all as hereinafter more fully described, and specifically set forth in the claim. I
In the annexed drawings, Figure is an edge view of a door supported by my improved roller or carrier. Fig. 2 is a side View of the said carrier and the portion of the door riding thereon, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section of my invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
N represents a sliding door of a barn or other building or structure. Beneath the door,
and at right angles therewith, I rigidly secure to the sill S of the building, or to some other stationary part thereof, a horizontal journal, A, preferably of the form of a spindle turned off smoothly from one end part way the length thereof, and screw-threaded from thence to the opposite end, by which screw-threaded portion itis screwed into the sill. At or near the junction of the smooth journal portion A of the spindle and screw threaded" portion thereof, I rigidly attach to said spindle a collar, B, by which it abuts against the side of the sill.
R R represent two rollers, mounted adjustable longitudinally on the journal portion of the spindle, and carrying on top of their treads the door N, and provided with circumferential flanges C 0, between which the door Serial No. 198,804. (No model.)
is guided in its movement. These rollers are of a width to properly guide by their flanges a door of minimum thickness-say one inch. v
The journal A is of sufficient length to allow the two rollers R R to be spread apart from each other and increase the width between the flanges O C of said rollers, according tothe thickness of the'door to be carried by the rollers. The rollers are maintained in their adjusted positions by one or more interchangeable spreaders, D, interposed between the rollers and a linchpin, I, inserted in the outer end portion of the spindle, and if necessary a washer, E, is introduced between the linchpin and adjacent roller R, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
I do not limit myself to the use of the linchpin, as it is obvious that the spindle may be screw-threaded at its outer end, and a nut may be applied thereto to retain the rollers on the spindle.
The top of the door may be guided by a roller, F, pivoted on a vertical spindle secured to the top of the door, which roller runs between two guide-plates, L L, secured to the building in any ordinary and well-known manner.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s 7 In a sliding-door carrier, the combination of the stationary horizontal journal A, fixed collar B, rollers R R, provided with flanges O C, Spreaders D, washer E, and a linchpin, I, or its described equivalent for confining the rollers on the journal, substantially as described and shown.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name and affixed my seal, in the presence of two attesting witnesses, at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, this 23d day of March, 1886.
PHILIP n. GANSZ. [L.S.]
Witnesses:
FREDERICK H. GIBBs, O. H. DUELL.
