Be it known that I, HENRY LANGEBERG, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Britten, in the county of Marshall and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grates, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to gate constructions, and more particularly to a gate especially designed for use in the care of live stock, it being the primary object of the invention to provide a horizontally adjustable gate to permit the gate to be set at a predetermined width to allow small animals to pass through, but exclude larger animals.

A further object of the invention is to provide a gate of this character having a novel form of locking means for locking the gate in various positions of adjustment.

With theforegoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination ofparts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this application wherein like characters denote correspondin parts in the several views, and in which i igure 1 illustrates a front elevational View of a gate constructed in accordance with the present invention;

Figure 2 illustrates a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and

Figure 3 illustrates a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawings in detail, the reference character 5 designates the support or body portion of the frame which is formed preferably of cast iron, the same cast in one piece and provided with a lateral opening 19 to permit the passage of animals there through.

Guideways 6 formed of angle irons are secured to. the body portion, the same being disposed along the side edges of the body portion, the ends of the guideways terminating adjacent the ends thereof. These guide-ways are secured to the body'portion as by means of rivets 7 passing through suitable openings provided in the angle irons and in the body portion 5. At one end of the body portion 5 is provided a vertically disposedbar 8 which braces the guide-ways 6 at their ends to eliminate any possibility Serial No. 468,496.

The gate proper is mounted to operate in the guideways 6 and includes upper and lower rails 9 and 10 respectively which rails are of widths to closely fit within the guideways to eliminate vertical movement thereof, but at the same time, allow the gate to slide freely within the guide-ways to accomplish the purpose of the invention.

As shown, the gate also includes the side rails 11 and 12, which rails have connection with the rails 9 and 10 in any suitable manner, there being provided intermediate rails 13 which have one of their respective ends secured to the rails 9 and 10 associated there with, while the opposite ends thereof have connection with the central spaced bars 14.

These central spaced bars have connection with the rails 11 and 12 respectively, at points adjacent to the ends thereof in a manner to support the bars 14 in proper spaced relation to each other at all times.

A securing device is indicated at 15 and em bodies a relatively long bolt 16 secured to the frame portion 5, the threaded portion thereof lying between the bars 14 and accommodating the wing nut 17 and washer 18, the washer being of a diameter to span the space between the bars 14 and lie in a plane over the front edges of the bars 14 where the same may be clamped into close engagement therewith by means of the-wing nut 17 thereby 'providing means for securing the gate proper in various positions of adjustment, it being understood that the gate is to be moved horizontally within the guide-ways, so that the width of the opening which the gate closes may be varied at the will of the operator to permit smaller animals to pass through the gate, and at the same time exclude larger animals.

In the use of a gate of this character it is obvious that the gate and its frame may be secured as for instance to the side wall of a pen so that the gate may be changed in width to any desired degree.

I claim:

1. In a gate construction, a body including guideways, a gate section including a plurality of spaced vertical bars, a plurality of intermediate bars, central spaced horizontal bars, the inner ends of the intermediate bars having connection with the central spaced horizontal bars, and locking means operating between the spaced horizontal bars for 1001(1119' the gate 1n varlous posltxons of ad ustment.
