STANCHION. APPLICATION FILED MAR. 7.1917- Patented Sept. 11 1917.

STANCHION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. til, 19117.
Application filed. March 7, 1917. Serial No; 153,029.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Hneo C. RAssMANN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Beaver Dam, in the county of Dodge and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Stanchions and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in stanchions and more particularly to fastening and adjusting means therefor, one object of the invention being to so construct the device that the locking means shall be so concealed and protected as to preclude possibility of interference by the cattle.
A further object is to provide simple means whereby the stanchion may be readily adjusted to accommodate cattle of different sizes.
A further object is to provide the hinged member of the stanchion with a rest to engage a stall post and to so construct and attach said rest that it shall be adjustable whereby it may be adapted for use in stalls of difierent widths.
A further object is to so construct the stanchion that it shall have a continuous closed top along which a part on the hinged member of the stanchion may travel and properly guide the locking device to position and also prevent the stanchion from becoming warped or damaged.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of a stanchion showing an application of my improvements; Fig. 2 is a plan view; Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of a portion of the device, with the hinged member of the stanchion shown in transverse section, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view showing the positions of the parts when the stanchion is open.
1 represents the stationary upright member of a stanchion provided at its upper end with the upper horizontal cross bar 2 constituting the closed top of the stanchion, and at 3, the movable upright member of the stanchion is shown, the lower end of the standard 3 being hinged to the lower portion (not shown) of the stanchion, in any suitable manner.
A bracket or casting l partially embraces the top bar 2 of the stanchion and is provided with side portions 5 which project partially over the stanchion bar 2, and from said side portions 5, perforated arms (3 project upwardly for the reception of a suitable bolt to which suspending means for the stanchion may be attached. The side portions 5 of the bracket A are made with elon gated slots 7 for the accommodation of a bolt 8 which also passes through the top stanchion bar 2. By thus connecting the stanchion bar 2 with the bracket 4i, these parts may be adjusted relatively to each other to effect adjustment of the stanchion for width, and when the parts have been properly adjusted they will be secured in place, by tightening the nut 9 on said bolt.
The bracket or casting 4k is provided therein at respectivesides of the stanchion top bar 2 with beveled lugs 10 which constitute keepers to be engaged by latch arms, as more fully hereinafter explained.
A bracket or casting 11 partially embraces and is pivotally connected with the upper portion of the hinged stanchion upright 3 by means of a pin or bolt 12. This hinged bracket also embraces the top stanchion bar 2 (being made with an opening 13 through which said bar 2 passes) and is so formed as to cooperate with the fixed bracket or casting t to entirely inclose the latch devices, when the stanchion is closed as shown in Fig. 1. The hinged bracket or casting 11 is provided at its forward end with a finger 145 which enters notches 15 in the side portions 5 of the fixed bracket and is thus operated to retain the parts tightly in position when the stanchion is closed.
Latch arms 16 are pivotally mountedon the pin or bolt and connected at their rear lower ends by a cross bar 17 which constitutes a finger piece for operating the latch arms. A spring 18 is interposed between the hinged upright 3 of the stanchion and the cross bar 17 of the latch devices, said spring operating to press said cross bar against inwardly projecting lugs 19 on the hinged bracket or casting 11 and tending to cause the hooked ends of the latch arms to automatically engage the lugs or keepers 10 in the fixed bracket or casting 4. In order to properly guide the latch arms into the bracket 4 when the stanchion is being, closed, said bracket may be formed with a lip 20.
A spring 21 encircles the pivot pin or bolt 12 and is caused to bear against the inner wall of the stanchion upright 3 and the hinged bracket or casting 11 respectively. This spring acts to press the upper portion of the bracket 11 downwardly and cause the same to ride on the top bar of the stanchion and the finger 14 to properly enter the notches 15 when the stanchion is being closed. A pin 22 may be made to project from the stanchion upright 3 in position to be engaged by the depending portion of the hinged bracket 11 so that in the event that the spring 21 should break, said bracket would still be held in proper position to cause the finger 14 to enter the recesses 15 when the stanchion is being closed.
A stanchion rest or fork 23 to engage a stall post 24c to prevent the stanchion from turning when in open position, is carried by the pivoted bracket or casting 11. For this purpose, the bracket or casting 11 is rovided with a flange 25 on which the rest or fork is seated, and in order that the lattermay be adjusted for stalls of diiferent widths, the flange 25 is provided with elongated slots 26 for the passage of the securing. bolts 27.
To limit the outward movement of the hinged stanchion standard and prevent the I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
The combination with the top bar and hinged upright of a stanchion of a bracket secured to said bar and having latch engaging means at respective sides of the latter, a bracket pivoted to the hinged standard and embracing said bar, latch arms pivoted within the pivoted bracket, and a cross bar connecting said latch arms Within the pivoted bracket, said cross bar constituting a finger piece for operating said latch arms.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
