SCHOLARS COMPANION.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No- 343,201, dated June 8, 1886.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS D. RICHARD- soN, of New York. in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scholars Companions, of which the following is a specification.

. This invention relates to that class of devices commonly termed scholars companion, and the present device embraces a water-bottle, sponge, washing or drying pad, pencil'sharpeners, and lead-pencil eraser, all combined in one small and compact structure.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device complete; Fig. 2, avertical central section of the same, and Figs. 3 and 4 views illustrating certain details.

A indicates the body of the cleaner, the lower part thereof being of substantially rectangular form, while its upper portion is cylindrical. The cylindrical upper portion is made hollow or tubular, to provide a chamber, a, to receive a bottle or vial, B, which latter is made to tit rather snugly in the socket, in or-- der to prevent its accidental displacement, and, if desired, it may be permanently cemented or otherwise secured therein. Only the head or neck of the bottle B is exposed, its sides and body being protected against breakage by the wooden surrounding body or holder. The bottle B is provided with a cork or other suitable stopper, 1), to the lower end of which is attached a piece, 0, of sponge or other absorbent material. Sponge is preferred, however, as it is easily compressed and passes readily through the neck of the bottle. The stopper and sponge are shown removed in Fig. 3. The sponge a may be at tached to the cork by any convenient means, alight wire being shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 for that purpose.

The sponge is for the purpose of washing the slate-surface, and in order to wipe or dry the slate after being washed the bottom of the block A is covered with a layer of felt, d, which is secured in place by cement or in any other suitable manner.

The front and rear facesof the lower portion of the block A are provided each with a transverse groove, e, which on one face is made V-shaped and on the other semicircular.

These grooves e are each covered with an abrading material placed directly upon the walls of the grooves; or they may be lined with sand paper or emery cloth, or otherwise roughened: These aln'ading-surfaces are for the purpose of sharpening lead and slate pen cils, as is commonly done.

In order to provide the device with a pencileraser a hole or socket, f, is made in one of its faces, as shown in Fig. 2, in which is inserted a rubber-eraser, O, as shown in Fig. 4..

The device is small and compact, and possesses all the advantages and conveniences of the separate articles. It is not essential that the upper portion containing the bottle B be made cylindrical, or that the lower portion be made rectangular, as it is obvious that other forms will answer.

The bottom of the block A is inclined or beveled, so as to get as wide a surface of the felt wiper as possible in a small implement.

The block A may be made ofany suitable ma terial-metal, rubber, or wood. By making the block of rubber the vial B may be omitted, and the cork or stopper 1) used to close the top of the socket a, which latter serves all the purposes of the vial. .W'hen made of wood, the interior of the socket to can be lined with cork or other material impervious to water, thus doing away with the bottle or vial.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. As a new article of manufacture, a slatecleaner having its bottom face beveled or inclined and provided with a wiper.

2. A slate-cleaner consisting of a block provided with a wiper on one face, and with a water-receptacle having a stopper provided with a sponge.

3. The new article of manufacture herein described, consisting of a block, A, a wiper, d, applied to one face of said block, water-receptacle B, having stopper b and sponge c, pencil-sharpener e, and eraser C, said parts being contained within or carried by the block A.
