PIPE WRENCH.
No. 338,731. Patented Mar. 30, 1886.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE M. GILLETT, OF LARNED, KANSAS.
PIPE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,731, dated March 30, 1886.
Serial No. 158,507. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I. GEORGE M. GILLETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Larned, in the county of Pawnee and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Wrenches of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in pipe-wrenches, and has for its object to provide a wrench simple and cheap in construction which may be used for screwing and un screwing pipes and their connections. This object is attained by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of' this spccication, in which- Figure l is a side elevation with the jaws of the wrench open to receive a pipe. Fig. 2 is a plan.
The letter A indicates a strong metal bar, forming the handle of the wrench, near one end of which are the studs c, projecting ontwardly a short distance on each side, for a purpose hereinafter described. That part ot' the bar A forming the handle tapers gradually and becomes enlarged into a head, A', provided with serrations a', which are intended to engage with the pipe and prevent slipping. A slotted L-shaped piece of metal, B, having serrations b, straddles the head A,and is firmly riveted thereto by the rivet C, upon which the piece B turns freely, and thereby permits the head A and slotted piece B to be opened, so as to embrace the opposite sides of the pipe and to permit the serrations a' and b to engage l therewith. A spring, D, made preferably of spring-wire, and soldered or welded so as to forni a single continuous piece of metal, is bent so as to encircle the studs a on each side of the bar A. One portion, d, of the spring D is carried close to the opposite sides .of the bar A, and crosses over the top thereof, thus forming a loop, which serves the purpose to maintain the spring D in its proper position. The part D forms a wider loop, d, than the portion d, and adapts it to extend across the top of the slotted piece B, and thereby keep thejaws of the wrench in a closed position when not in use.
It will be observed that when the head A enters the slot in the part B the jaws may be made to embrace a pipe of the very smallest diameter, and that this formation prevents the wrench from turning in a lateral direction when in use.
Having described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent, and claim, 1s
In a pipe-wrench, the spring D, having loops d d', in combination with the stud a, handle A, having head A', and slotted pivoted piece B, having serrations, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence ot' two witnesses.
G. M. GILLETT.
