UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGERIDGEXVAY, OF TOVVANDA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BLACKlNG-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 336,748, dated February 23, 1886.
Application filed December 5, 1885. Serial No. 184,807. (No model To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE RIDGEWAY, of Towanda, in the county of Bradford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and usefullmprovement in Blacking-Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference be ing had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the blacking box with the cover removed. Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on line w as in Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts in both the figures of the drawmgs.
The object of my invention is to provide a blacking-box which may be used without soiling the fingers.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
The boX A is of the usual form, having a plane bottom, a, a cylindrical outer wall, I), having formed therein a bead, c, to stiffen it. To the bottom a of the box A is secured a circular rim, (1, which extends toward the open side of the box, but terminates a short distance below the top of the box. The compartment 0, formed by the rim d, is filled with blacking, while the annular space f between the rim d and the side of the box is left empty.
The cover B is provided with a downward- ]y-projecting rim, 9, and is indented in the central part thereof, so that when the cover is in its place on the box, with the rim 9 outside of the upper edge of the wall of the box, the indented portion h touches the upper edge of the rim d and closes the compartment e, thus preventing the drying up of the blacking contained by the box.
when the box is taken in the hand of the user for the purpose of removing the blacking therefrom, the brush is prevented from coming in contact with the fingers by the outer wall of the box, which reaches above the rim d, and is sufficiently distant from the rim to prevent the bristles of the brush from reaching the fingers.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is-
As an improved article of manufacture, a blacking'box formed of the box A, provided with the rim d, attached to the bottom thereof, and forming, with the body of the box, the compartments and the annular space f, and the cover B, having a downwardly-projecting rim,g,andindented central portion, h, substan tially as herein specified.
GEORGE RIDGEWAY.
