Definitions

  • rollers no longer turn about a shaft of rotation but are moved along horizontal paths.
  • the full roller and the roller getting empty are arranged alongside each other but have to be driven in opposite direction with regard to each other.
  • the gluing of the new web to the old web. is effected by tiltable pressing rollers arranged between the full and empty rollers. These pressing rollers glue the new .web alternately once on the left-hand roller and then on the right-hand roller.
  • FIG. 1 is an elevation which shows an unwinding device according to which the full paper roller is by means of abutments actuated by spindles moved into its position of operation.
  • FIG. 2 is a view showing a modification according to which the full roller after having been released moves to the driving drum over a cam and during the unwinding operation exerts a constant pressure.
  • FIG. 3 is a fragmentary view which illustrates an embodiment in which the inclined running path includes an incline over which the full paper roller is pressed into contact with the driving drum.
  • the device for unwinding web material especially paper webs
  • which device includes an automatic or controlled roller exchange is characterized primarily by two horizontal, inclined, straight, or curved roller paths for receiving the tambour stud of the paper roll to be unwound and is furthermore characterized by Ia driving drum coupled to the calender drive and arranged between the roller paths.
  • the arrangement is such that the paper roller which is rotated in conformity with the desired web speed, due to its own weight or a drive, rotates very closely to the driving drum, whereas the paper roller which continuously decreases in diameter, shortly prior to the complete unwinding, rolls over the driving drum and moves to an end abutment while between the tambour at the end abutment and the driving drum there will be provided a free paper path which at the instance of the establishment of the contact of the rubberized paper start of the new paper roll with the paper web being unwound is separated by manual or fully Aautomatic control by means of a knife.
  • a strong machine support 1 the upper end of which forms two slightly inclined roller paths 2.
  • a driving drum 4 Slightly ahead of the left-hand end of the fnachine support, preferably in a bearing 3 which is adjustable as to height, there is arranged a driving drum 4.
  • the diameter and location of the driving drum are so selected thatthe drum extends to a certain extent below the transverse edges of the roller paths 2.
  • a pressure roller 6 which is supported by two levers 5.
  • Roller 6 is adapted by means of adjustable pulling devices, for instance a pneumatic cylinder 7, to be pressed against driving drum 4.
  • the threaded spindles 15 are guided in threaded spindles 15 arranged on both sides of the roller paths 2 and are adjusted by said spindles in both directions over the same distance.
  • the drive of the threaded spindles is for instance effected by a motor 16 through a uniform movement shaft 17 and chain drives 18 and can be controlled manually or automatically.
  • the abutment 13 serves for guiding the paper roll 9 placed in readiness, whereas abutment 14 holds fast the unwinding roll at the culmination of driving drum 4 in the direction of the axis.
  • the abutrnents 13 and 14 are either by hand or automatically placed into movement toward the left whereby the roll, in the end position, will roll on the abutment 8 and from there will be unwound further, whereas the new roll placed in readiness closely ahead of the driving drum in position 9 moves against the driving drum, while the glue covered paper start 25-26 sticks to the unwinding path.
  • the unwinding operation and the exchange of the rolls are effected as follows. As soon as only a few layers are left on the tambour being unwound, the calender speed may be reduced, and the new paper roll which in the meantime, by means of two spindles 15, has been moved into the dash line position 9 of readiness7 is brought into contact with the driving drum by tilting the abutrnents 13. At the same time, a drum knife 23 actuated by a driving device 21 through a lever 22 is pushed into the path of the free paper web 12 whereby the paper path being unwound is severed.
  • the tilting of the abutrnents 13 may be effected by any suitable device, for instance by a pneumatic latching arrangement not shown in the drawing which is adapted to be supplied with pressure uid from a conduit 19 through a pressure hose 20.
  • the end 25 to be glued on and pertaining to the new paper roll 9 has previously been supplied with an adhesive. In most instances, the ends are cut in a zigzag manner so that they will extend into the range of from point .25 to point .26 on the paper roll. During the gluing and pressing operation carried out in connection with the new paper roll for pressing the same against the driving drum, care is to be taken that this will take place at an instant at which the tips are located at point 25 of the paper start at the shortest distance from the driving drum or shortly ahead thereof. With only a little skill and by providing colored markings on the side surface of the paper web, the said work may be controlled manually. However, the invention also provides to release the pressure time point automatically, for instance by means of a stroboscopic surveying device.
  • the abutrnents 14 are returned to position 11 and the abutrnents 13 are returned to the uppermost location for receiving a new paper roll.
  • the pulling is effected advantageously by means of the same device which actuates the beating knife 23.
  • a braking jaw 24 At the levers 22 of the knife arrangement there is also provided a braking jaw 24.
  • confining rails 27 are arranged advantageously at both sides f the roller path.
  • the drive motor for accelerating the paper roll placed in readiness so as to bring the paper roll up to the paper velocity required at the instant the gluing operation takes place is arranged in the machine support along an axial extension of the tambour and may selectively be drivingly engaged and disengaged by means of a manually or remote controlled clutch.
  • FIG. 2 shows a simplified embodiment according to the invention in which the spindles with the abutrnents yare no longer needed.
  • the roller paths 2 are formed by a cam surface so that the rollers move rst from the highest point in a flat inclined section 28 which latter through a curve merges with section 28 of a greater incline.
  • the curvature and the inclination within the range 29 are so selected that the full paper roll which has been brought into contact with driving drum 4 will during the unwinding operation be in engagement with the drum 4 at a constant pressure.
  • the inclination within the range 28 is, however, so selected that the roll placed in readiness will after release of an abutment 31 at not too high a speed but at the proper time roll against the driving drum which event will take place approximately at the position 29.
  • Aibutment 31 is tilted at point 32 ⁇ and is actuated for instance by a pneumatic pressure cylinder 33.
  • two limiting rails 27 are provided which, however, in order not to interfere with the removal of the empty tambour must lbe foldable for instance -by folding about pivot 34 by means of 4a pressure cylinder piston system 35.
  • FIG. 3 Still another embodiment of the present invention is illustrated in FIG. 3.
  • the roller paths are likewise curved but they start from the righthand abutment first with an ascending section 36 which merges at the culmination point 37 with the declining curved path or cam path. Therefore, at the correct gluing time, the full paper roll is by means of push levers 39 which are tiltable about pivot 38 and are actuated lby pulling cylinders pressed over the culmination point 37 ,and moves a short distance therebehind into contact with the driving drum 4.
  • the remaining devices correspond to those ydescribed in connection with FIGS. 1 ⁇ and 2.
  • the roller paths may also be horizontal and the paper rolls being unwound may automatically be moved by a resilient spindle drive, or the roller paths may be a'djustaible as to their inclination. It is important in connection with the present invention that that roller which is being unwound will, shortly before it becomes completely empty, roll over the driving drum and subsequently the next paper roll will be kept in readiness for contact with the driving drum at a slight distance therefrom and at the same speed of rotation.
  • the invention may be employed for the unwinding of paper, textiles and synthetic webs.
  • An apparatus for unwinding web material from rollers in a continuous manner, especially for use in connection with calenders which includes: a pair of laterally spaced roller guiding means for receiving and guiding a roller carrying web material to be unwound from said roller, driving drum means rotatably arranged between said roller guiding means and operable when guiding a web material carrying roller to unwind web material there.
