$PECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 335,925, dated February 9. 1886.
Application filed May 16, 1884. Renewed January 16, 1886. Serial No. 188,806. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ERNST HOHNEOK and ELISE HOHNEOK, of St Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in CarpetFasteners; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to an improvement in carpet-fasteners, the object of the same being to provide a device whereby carpets may be easily and securely fastened, and a further object being to provide means whereby the carpet-fasteners may be removed with great celerity and a small outlay of labor.
A further object is to provide devices of the above character which shall be economical in construction and durable and efficient in use; and with these ends in View our invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of our improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof, showing our improved device for raising thehooks. Fig. 3 is is a view of the carpetfastener with the hooks secured by means of sleeves or collars. Fig. 4 is a modified form of hook, and Fig. 5 is a modification of our improvement.
A represents a section of a floor, and B the baseboard. The metallic rod 0 is preferably made of brass, and is secured to the,
base-board or flooring, as may be preferred, by means of staples or the screws'D, the said screws being suitably provided with eyes, through which the rod 0 is passed. The rod may be of any size and shape and ornamented as desired. The rod 0 is provided with grooves E, to which are movably or loosely secured the hooks F. Said hooks are formed of pieces of wire, and are provided with the points G and the eyes H. The grooves are of sufficient depth to accommodate the hooks, and thus permit them to rest flush with the face of the rod; or, if desired, the rod may be of small circumference and the hooks secured thereto and held in position by means of collars or sleeves I, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
Vhen it is desired to secure a very heavy or thick carpet, we prefer to use the pronged hook, as shown in Fig. 4, as the same, being provided with several teeth, is more apt to securely grip and hold the carpet in position.-
If found inconvenient to use the rod, the same may be dispensed with, and the hooks can be secured to the base-board by means of suitable staples or screws, as shown in Fig. 5.
For the purpose of disengaging the hooks from contact with the carpet,we provide a cord or wire chain, J. The same is placed under and between the hooks F and the carpet, when the same are driven or forced therein. For convenience we provide the end of the cord or chain with a ring or loop, K, and secure one end thereof firmly to the floor or base-board. XVhen it is desired to disengage the said hooks, one end of the cord or chain is grasped and raised, and the same causes the hooks to become detached from the carpet, thus freeing thehooks without injury thereto, and leaving the hooks in such condition that they may be ready for use when again desired. After one of the hooks has been raised the cord is passed from under the hook, and the next one in order then raised or detached, and so on until each of the hooks has been detached, the cord by being passed under the hook as it is raised allowing the hooks following to be raised without trouble or inconvenience.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
1. In a carpet-fastener, the combination, with hooks movably secured to the base-board or floor, of a cord, wire, or chain situated between the hooks and the floor and adapted to disengage the hooks from a carpet, substantially as set forth.
2. In a carpet-fastener, the combination, with a rod secured to a floor or base-board 5 and hooks movably secured to said rod, of a cord, wire, or chain situated beneath the hooks and adapted to lift said hooks from engagement with a carpet, substantially as described.
3. In a carpet-fastener, the combination, 100
with a rod provided with annular grooves specification in the presence of'two subscriband secured to a floor or base-board, of hooks ing Witnesses. movably secured in said grooves and adapted T to penetrate and secure a carpet, and cords or 5 chains placed between the hooks and carpet, Y
whereby the said hooks may be disengaged \Vitnesses:
from the carpet, substantially as set forth. A. L. LANGELLIER,
In testimony whereof We have signed this 1 OMA S. LANGELLIER.
