JAMES O. STEWART, OF SPIRIT LAKE, OVA.
Wood-Tree case,
SPECIFICATION forming pari; of Letters Patent No. 335,850, dated February 9, 188.
Application filed March 25, 1885.
Serial No.'160,050. (No model.)
Be it known that l, .Lines O. STEWART, ol'
Spirit Lake, in the county of Dickinson and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved W'ood-Type Case, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention consists in a case or rack of novel construction for holding wood type, cuts, or engraved blocks, die., when not in use, to have them readily accessible when required, and to keep them clean, free from dust, flyspecks, and dirt generally. Said case is composed of a series of rack-frames, or leaves as they may be termed, hinged to open or close like a book, and partitioned by slats or narrow shelves arranged one above the other within the raised marginal portions of the frames, and made removable; also with guards in front to hold the wood type, blocks, 8:0., substantially as hereinafter described, and whereby great compactness, convenience, and security are afforded.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying d.rawings,'forming part ot'ihis specification, in which similar' letters of reference indicate corresponding` parts in all the figures.
Figure l represents a view in perspective of a Wood-type case embodying my invention as it appears when open, and comprising both in! ner and outer leaves or rack-frames. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through one of the inner leaves, and Fig. 3 a view in perspective of one of the ad j nstable or removable shelves A det-ached.
The case may be composed of two or more leaves or i'ackiraines, but is here shown as having four, A A, all united together down their back edges by hinges b, so as to close one upon the other or shut together like a book. One of the outer leaves or rack-frames A may be secured by screws or otherwise to the wall at a convenient height for use, and so that when the case is closed it will occupy no objectionable amount of space. These rackframes or leaves A A have raised marginal strips c on their face, and extending across them and tting within them in an adjustable or removable manner, as by grooves d or otherwise, are any number of shallow shelves, f, ar ranged one above the other at suitable distances apart, and provided with front raised ledges or guards, e,v to form projecting racksnpports, and spaces g for the type. Said shelves should be made so as not to project beyond the marginal strips or portions c of the frames, so that the frames may shut close one upon or against the other,
The raised ledges e serve to hold thc type in place, and'by removing one or more of the shelveslarge t-ype or blocks may readily be received and held.
When inner rack-leaves or frames, A, are used in addition to the outer ones, A A, then said inner leaves may be constructed with raised marginal strips c and the shelves j' on both sides, so as to give double the capacity of the outer leaves, A, for the type s.
A wood-type rack or case constructed as described will be found cheap, convenient, readily removable when required, and will form a close or covered and compact protecting-receptacle for the type when not in use, with every facility i'or exposure of the type when needed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is#
A wood-type case or rack composed of two o r more leaves or frames of raised marginal construction on their faces, with removable shelves having raised front guards or ledges, said leaves beinghinged to close together, the one leaf upon the other, substantially as specified.
