Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J OHN F. NOLAN, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
COMPOSITION FOR PREVENTING AND REMOVING RUST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 333,883, dated January 5, 1886.
Application filed August 6, 1885. Serial No. 173,793.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. NOLAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented a new and useful Composition of Matter to be used for Preventing and Removing Rust upon MetalSurfaccs, of which the following is a description.
My composition consists of the following ingredients, viz: bisulphide ofcarbon, one ounce; beeswax, one-quarter ounce; pure sperm-oil, seven ounces. These ingredients are mixed in the following manner: The bisulphide of carbon and the beeswax are heated together in a closed vessel until the beeswax is thoroughly dissolved. 4 It will then be found the whole mixture will amount to only an ounce, one-quarter ounce having been evaporated in the heating. Take the pure spermoil and heat it to a boiling-point, and then add to it the beeswax and the bisulphide-ofcarbon mixture while said mixture is still hot. Agitate the entire mixture until the ingredients are thoroughly combined.
In orderto remove the unpleasant odor, add any suitable flavoring-mattersuch, for example, asthe oil of cassia-of which about a half a dram should be added to the proportions above stated.
In using the above-named composition theit will prevent oxidation taking place, and on a surface which has a slight coating of rust it will remove it.
The bisulphide of carbon in this composition is used as a solvent of the beeswax, which function it performs in a most complete man- (No specimens.)
ner, having no deleterious or oxidizing effect in itself, as would be the case if othersolvents, such as benzine, were used.
The bisulphide of carbon, by evaporating, leaves a slight coating or film of the beeswax and oil upon the surface of the metal. The effect of the beeswax in the mixture is to give elasticity to the coating or film which is left upon the surface, and the object of the spermoil, which is non-drying, is obvious. These ingredients mix thoroughly and completely in the first place, and the evaporation of the bisulphide ofiflcarbon leavesa perfect and lasting surface of the other ingredients.
I am aware that beeswax has been used as one of the ingredients of a rust preventive; but it has been in connection with such other ingredients as rosin, tallow, due. I also know that apaint compound consisting of bisulphide of carbon, vulcanized rubber, pitch, tar, and other heavy ingredients has been used for coating all kinds of surfaces; but these compositions of matter are obviouslynot the same as mine.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
' The herein-described composition of matter to be used for preventing and removing rust from metallic surfaces, consisting of bisulphide of carbon, beeswax, and sperm-oil united substantially in the proportions specified, and substantially as herein described.
In witness wnereof I have hereunto set my hand.
JOHN F. NOLAN.
