SPECIFICATION forming'part of Letters Patent No. 333,517, dated January 5, 1886.

To all whom t may concern.-

Be it known that I, MARY AGNEs GREE- LEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ottumwa, in the county of Wapello and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Candlesticks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such Aas will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and io the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in candlestieks, in which the candle is held upon a yielding seat by means of a cap all over the upper end of the candle, so that as the candle burns and Ybecomes shortened the yielding seat will crowd it upward automatically and retain the flame always at the same height.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l shows a sectional view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the drip-cup, and Fig. 3 is a detail View of the cap.

In carrying out my invention I use the ordinary tube of a Candlestick, as shown at A, for a receiver. B is a seat or plate securely fastened to the upper end of the spiral spring O. This spring is inserted within a series of wires, c, i'orminga tube. These Wires are fastened at their lower ends by a plate, b, and at A This band is also provided with a hook, d, and pin c, or other suitable device for securing the cap D in position. About halfway down the wires a, or thereabout, is a band, E. This band is to prevent the wires from expanding while the spring is being compressed, thus avoiding all diiiiculty in inserting the candle into'the tube of the Candlestick.

The drip-cup, of the form as shown in Fig. 2, is composed of a tube, F, provided with a 4concave flange, G, to receive the waste. This The candle is placed upon the seat, and with slight pressure the spring is compressed until the candleis inclosed within the frame or tube. The cap is then turned over the top of the candle and secured. The drip-cup being previously placed in position in the Candlestick, the frame carrying the candle is then dropped in, so as to allow the-pin or stop to enter the slot of the cup. Itis then in position ready for use.

I prefer the spring being incased in a frame composed of wires, as shown, as sometimes it is necessary to employ both hands to com press it, and also requires less labor in cleaning.

Vhat I claim, and desire' to secure by Letters Patent, is- Y The frame composed of a series of wires, a., fastened at their lower ends by a plate, b, and their upper ends by band c, having hook d and pin c, the cap D, and band E, constructed as described, to receive the spring G, provided with a seat, B, substantially as herein shown and described.
