Description

@NID A WILLIAM L. GRAIN, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
FOLDABLE CAMP-STOVE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr.`3, 1917.
Application filed August 19, 1916. Serial No. 115,848.
To all lwhom t may concern:
Be it known that I, vVILLrAM L. GRAIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Foldable Camp-Stoves, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to a foldable camp stove.
It is an object of this invention to construct a camp stove which is exceedingly simple, inexpensive of manufacture and which may be set up in operative position or taken down and folded in a short space of time.
It is another object of this invention to devise a camp stove comprising few parts which will confine the heat of the lire and apply the same to the cooking utensils with maximum efficiency.
It is another object of this invention to devise a camp stove consisting of but two separate pieces and which when folded, occupies a compact space.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description pro ceeds, my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specication, I have illustrated a convenient and practical einbodiment of my invention and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my camp stove assembled and ready for use.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the camp stove taken from the side of the fire opening.
Fig. I is a detail view on an enlarged scale showing the manner in which the side walls of the stoves are hinged together.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the side wall in folded position.
Fig. 6 is a top plan view ofthe pivoted gridirons.
In the drawings, 10 designates the side wall of my camp stove which is preferably made of two sections 11 and 12. These sections are made of flexible sheet metal, rectangular in shape and provided at their ends with vertical tubular eyes 13, 13. These eyes are formed by bending the ends of the rectangular sections upon the main body thereof as clearly shown in Fig. 1. A rod or pin 14 is passed through the eyelet 13 of section 11 and the opposite ends of said rod are bent upon itself and inserted into the eyelet 13 of the section 12, (see Fig. e) thereby forming a double hinge allowing the side wall sections 11 and 12 to be folded upon each other as shown in Fig. 5.
The other ends of the sections 11 and 12 are hinged together and maintained in spaced relation by means of an inverted U-shaped member 15 whose vertical portions pass through the eyelets 18, 13 of the sections 11 and 12 as shown in Fig. 1, the transverse horizontal section thereof lcon necting the top of said sections.
rIhe gridirons consist of a pair of metal bars 16, 17 pivoted together by a pin 18 passing through the middle of said bars. The ends of each lbar is provided with a leg portion 19 of a height corresponding approximately to the height of the side wall. The length of the horizontal portion of the gridirons 16 and 17 corresponds to the diameter of the circle formed by the side wall .Sections 11 and 12 when the latter is in its extended or operative position.
In the operation p of the device, the U-shaped member 15 is inserted into the eyes 13, 13 of the sections 11 and 12. I prefer to attach one leg of said member permanently to one of said sections by upsetting the lower end thereof as at 20. The gridiron members are inserted between the side wall sections 11 and 12 and opened so they will occupy positions at right angles to `each other. rIhis opening movement will cause the legs 19 of said gridirons to engage the side wall and spread the same to form a ring as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Cooking utensils 21 indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2 may be placed on the top of the stove, the bottom of said cooking utensils resting on the gridirons and the upper edge of the side walls of the stove. It should be noted that the fire in the camp stove 1s confined by the side walls thereof and that the heat is efficiently applied to the bottom of the cooking utensils. Afire opening 22 between the adjacent ends of the sections 11 and 12 which areheld by the U-shaped nember 15 serves for the introduction of uel.
When it is desired, the camp stove may be easily removed from the fire by simply inserting a rod or hook below the gridirons and lifting the same away from the lire. After the camp stove has cooled suiiiciently,
. camping parties going in automobiles.
claim:
l. A foldable camp stove, comprising a pair of rectangular side Wall sections made of flexible sheet metal hinged together at one end and connected at the other With a spacing member forming a fire opening, and al pair of pivoted gridirons provided at their ends with vertical. legs of a height substantially of the height of said side Walls, the length of said gridirons corresponding to the diameter of the side Walls When the 'latter are in their extended circular position.
2. A foldable camp Vstove comprising a pair of side Wall sections made of flexible sheet metal and hinged together and a pair of gridirons provided at their ends with vertical legs of a height substantially of the height of said side Walls, the length of said gridirons corresponding to the diameter ofthe side Walls When the latter are in their extended circular position.
3. A foldable camp stove comprising a pair of hinged side Wall sections made of liexible sheet metal and provided With a lire opening, and a pair of gridirons provided at their ends with vertical legs, the length of said gridirons corresponding to the diameter of the side Walls when the latter are in their extended circular position.
4. A foldable camp stove comprising a flexible metal stove, comprising a side Wall made of a flexible metal sheet, means for keeping the ends thereof in spaced relation to form a lire opening, and a pair of gridirons provided at their ends with vertical legs of a height substantially of the height of the side Wall, the length of said gridirons corresponding approximately to the diameter of the side Wall When the latter is in its extended circular position.
5. A foldable camp stove comprising a iiexible metal stove comprising a side Wall made of a iiexible metal sheet, means for keeping the ends thereof in spaced relation to form a fire opening, and a pair of gridirons provided at their ends with vertical legs, the length of said gridirons corresponding approximately to the diameter of the side Wall when the latter is in its extended circular position.
G..A foldable camp stove comprising a pair of hinged side Wall sections made of iiexible sheet metal, and a pair of gridirons provided`at their ends with vertical legs,
the length of said gridirons corresponding to the diameter of the side Walls when the latter are in their extended circular position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this speciiication.
WILLIAM L. GRAIN.
