JAR PROTECTOR AND SEALER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 333,455, dated December 29, 1885.
Application filed July 23, 1885.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARTIN V. B. EUANs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Portsmouth, in the county of Scioto and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Jar Protectors and Sealers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in devices for protecting and sealing or securing the tops to fruitjars; and my invention consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a fruit-jar protector and sealer constructed in accordance with my invention; and Fig. 2 is a sectional View.
.A represents a fruit or other jar which is of ordinary construction, said jar having its bottom slightly depressed, as shown at a,while its neck is provided with an upwardly-projecting rim, a, from which extends an inwardly-projecting shoulder, b, which serves as a support for a rubber gasket, above which is located a covering-plate, B.
A is a concave cover, which rests within the flanges a of the jar immediately upon the covering-plate B, which cover is pressed upon the same and held in position by a crossbar, as will be hereinafter set forth.
0 is a circular base, which has stamped up therefrom or attached thereto a circular raised Serial No. 172,460. (No mo "el.)
flange, c, which is adapted to fit within the depression in the bottom of the jar, so as to retain the same centrally upon the base. The outer periphery of the base is turned upwardly, and at suitable intervals there are attached thereto upwardly-projecting strips D, which are of greater length than the jar A. The top E of the casing, near its outer edge, is rigidly secured to the strips D, and it is provided on its under edge with inclined pieces 6. The cover ofthe jar is held in position by a block, F, which extends across the top, and is provided with. a central depending portion, f, which is curved on its under face where it bears on the concave surface of the top. When it is desired to secure the cover on the jar,the block F is placed under the top E, and turned so that its ends will come in contact with the beveled pieces e, and when further turned the top will be forced and held securely in place. The opening in the upper portion, E, is of such a size that the jar may be passed through the same.
In order to forma further protection for the jar, so as to exclude the rays of light from the contents of the jar, I place a cylinder or sheet of card-board between the outer frame and the jar, as shown at G.
I claim- In a fruit-jar protector and holder, at casing or frame, substantially as described, provided with a top having inclined depending portions and a block, F, which engages with the same to retain the cover in position, substantiallyas set forth.
